A consistant rythym is what tires a baby out....this literally stimulates. For example: a frog croaking will last about 3 seconds then go to an ocean for 3 seconds, ect...melodies are the same, it just plays each song for a few seconds and changes to the next. Not peaceful or lulling at all. I love rocking him to sleep, but the moment I out him down he wakes. I out this on just next to his bassinet and he stays asleep.even if he wakes up, the sounds and lights help him drift back off. My son is now 2 and still won't fall asleep without this thing. The best feature is that it turns on automatically if we wakes up in the night crying or calling out. He goes right back to sleep most of the time with the soothing music and lights on the ceiling. Love it! It creates an amazing sleep environment for him. Wish they had a small travel version. We have 2 other musical products in the room, but this works the best in terms of lulling and keeping him asleep. Personally we like the white noise sounds more than the music (most of the songs sound as if they're in the minor key which makes them a little creepy sounding, hence only 4 stars). Love that it plays automatically after 4 seconds of crying (though sometimes that seems too long) - the first time my baby woke up crying and it began playing, he started cooing and laughing within seconds! However, we have found that if he laughs/ happy squeals at a certain pitch, it also starts automating at that. The range of volume control is amazing, 3 different colours of light projections, 3 different timer setting and impressive selection of baby rhymes, nature sounds and lullabies (none of them is annoying). I highly recommend it for parents of the newborns as it comes with sleep- deprived- parent-friendly controls: volume can be set at barely audible, projections can be set at very dim setting (orange), the on/off switch can be easily found even in the dark. It also has a very sensitive sound sensor and it will respond to baby&rsquo;s cries with calming music and the light turns on which makes it easier for a parent to navigate in the dark (or if you don&rsquo;t want that-you can turn the hippo off after baby is asleep). Our toddler depends on it to fall asleep, switches the music according to his mood and the hippo travels with us everywhere. The demo batteries that are included with the hippo wear off pretty quickly and when batteries are weak, the music gets stuck on the first verse and the hippo appears broken (but once you will replace the batteries you can expect about 4 weeks of constant use).
