It's fun to build it up seeing it all come together, but disappointing to see it all become more or less inaccessible once the model is completed. All that intricate gearing that's brought into the cockpit is lost once you've put on the doors and roof. Hi and Lo Range? Gear select? You can't really use them. The only control that's externally accessible is the steering which is routed through to the roof. It almost feels like putting in all that fancy transmission was pointless if you can't easily play with it. I compare this model with the rough terrain crane that I recently built which has lots of functions, ALL of which are easy accessible for play. That brings me to my second major issue with the model -- lack of motor control. The land rover would have made a fantastic app-controlled toy. It would have been so much cooler if you could drive it and change gears under motor control. I've seen some AFOLs on youtube who have pulled off a motorized conversion of this model, but I think it should have been motorized from the get-go (or at least have an option for motorizing it). So overall I was disappointed. This model could (and should) have been great, but it falls short.
Date published: 2021-04-02

Rated 5 out of 5 by BrickBaz from What a set! After building a few lego system sets I decided to try a technic set, the Defender was at the upper limit of what I wanted to spend, I am so glad I decided to get it. Firstly what a challenge, you really have to concentrate while building it, every piece has to be in the exact location, meaning you truly get lost in the building process. Secondly the finished model is fantastic so many awsome details to discover. Finally it really is an enjoyable experience, learning about how all the gears work and getting them to run smoothly! I have enjoyed Lego City sets since i was little, but this is a whole new level of fun! I love dealing with small parts and mechanics, so the build wasn't bad at all, the instructions where clear and concise, and I paced myself so that I enjoyed every bit of it. I really enjoyed it! It was so cool to be able to build the transmission, pinion gears and engine! It was really challenging and I found myself double checking the instructions repeatedly to make sure I was doing it correctly, so it took some time, but I didn’t mind that at all. I was impressed with how the chassis fit together even though you are building them in separate sections. I was missing two pieces, one I was able to get creative with some leftover pieces from other bags in the set (at first it was a bit of a surprise, but part of the fun is getting creative to solve problems that come up while building), the second piece was for the folding ladder on the side of the truck which I ordered and am waiting for it to arrive. It wasn’t critical to finishing the build, so it was not a big deal. I really enjoyed it and the finished product is hefty and massive beast to look at! It’s awesome! I’ve been continuing to tell all anyone who’ll listen how much fun this is and I bought one of my Managers the Volvo Dump Truck as a bonus for hitting his target last month and he is pumped! For his age, he did pretty good. This was actually a really good build for the most part. And I think that most fans will appreciate how technical it is. It's the finishing things that really disappointed me. 1. STICKERS...so many stickers! I hate anything with stickers. Lego is failing their fans with doing stickers instead of printed bricks. I realize there's a cost, but you're Lego...I think you're doing ok! 2. Some of the pins and their placements could be better. While not the places, but a great example is on all four fenders...2 of the pins holding the fenders in place are blue and 1 black...they should all be black...and not matching them looks dumb. I really wanted to give this one a higher rating...it was fun to build, but all the stickers just make the model look cheap.
Date published: 2021-01-24

Rated 5 out of 5 by LKibbler from Great design and fun build This was my first Technics model and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience building it. The final result gave him a great sense of accomplishment. The rugged design of the car is way better than the real one which is too round. The real one should have come out this way. He had a lot of fun for 7 hours straight without meals. I see a lot of complaints about the noise from the gears after finishing. But I found no mistakes in the set at all. It works just fine even if my son finished all by himself. That must be caused by the two universal joints which are not connected firmly. I confirmed it for my son. If those are loosely connected, the noise will be inevitable. So just be careful when you assemble two universal joint parts inside. Only one problem my son found on this was the disassembly which would be very painful.
Date published: 2021-01-04

Rated 5 out of 5 by ICALLFRANK from Quite nice It is a little car, but have so much stuffs to move
Date published: 2021-01-03

Rated 5 out of 5 by TomU from Best Set Ever I was gifted this over Christmas, and boy was I wowed throughout the build process. Getting to construct (from scratch) the entire powertrain was both difficult and exciting. I haven't built a LEGO set in many years, but this definitely re-lit that spark. The TECHNIC line of LEGO has always been my favorite, and this set raised the bar. It was so much fun watching everything come together. I would have to say the suspension is the party piece. I have never experienced a set with this much suspension manipulation. I was not missing any pieces and the instructions did not have a single fault. It all went together perfectly (with the occasional confusion induced four letter word). A challenging set that kept me occupied for three days with on-and-off building. I’m someone how typically is building with bricks opposed to Technic, so this was an excellent first “hard” Technic set. I do have a few concerns about the design though. The set advertises having the six cylinder engine, which it does, but the only way to engage the engine is to turn gears in the trunk of the vehicle. I’m not sure if this is a common feature for other Technic cars, but it would be nice to have an easily accessible gear to turn to operate the engine. I also thought it was a little disappointing that the door handles are non-operable. Not a huge loss, just a thought. But aside from those two things, honestly I love the set overall!
Date published: 2021-01-01

Rated 5 out of 5 by Dazz from Rewarding build Brilliant build straight out the box, Looks great on display as it is soo close to the actual vehicle it’s modelled on, thoroughly recommend!
Date published: 2020-12-28

Rated 5 out of 5 by Adnane45 from Genial Ce montage etait vraiment genial, tout les details sont extremement bien fait et les engrenages s'enckenche a merveille. However I think for most people it is doomed to be a display piece only. The transmission is just awful and very tricky to get working properly (it’s worth looking up clicking transmission on YouTube before you start building. That way you may at least get the gearbox sort of working right, but don’t expect a smooth or well built feel). The shocks are not nearly stiff enough for a model of this size and weight, and it is very foggy and slack over the front end. I had to request a replacement sticker set from Lego as the printed sheet wasn’t printed and pre-scored properly, so some of the stickers got torn. Fix that terrible transmission, or at least use a tried and tested setup that clearly wasn’t designed by committee and give it power functions and you would probably have one of the seminal Lego kits. It was challenging with all the gearing and one should always double check their work when there is so much complexity and interlocking (which makes it hard to go back to make repairs. I must say that for all the gearing and internal complexity, the Rover doesn't do much after it is completed. The most fun are the doors (side and back), the steering, the hood and the winch, THIS MODEL BEGS FOR A MOTOR. It would be so much fun if one could see all this gearing in action. LEGO should seriously consider a motor retrofit kit for this. I have recently built several Technics kits with motors and they are much more fun. Another point, it seems that a lot of builders have had trouble with the transmission (I needed to do some repairs...) so I think it would be helpful in the instructions to have some "in process tests" to make sure that things are working correctly before you proceed to much further.
Date published: 2020-11-26

Rated 5 out of 5 by VibraniumBrick from Great Technical Set! Truly enjoyed this build! I like to take my time building, and use the process to relax and forget about the world. This set really allowed me to concentrate on nothing else but the pieces in front of me. The ingenuity that went into the drive train and gear box is awesome, and the added features (winch, spare tire door lock, pistons, etc.) really make this build stand out.
Date published: 2020-11-15

Rated 5 out of 5 by tikku22 from Impressed After building the Bugatti and other Technic sets, for whatever biased reason, I assumed this Rover wouldn't be a very fun experience. Fortunately, I was wrong and it's actually turned out to be really great! The transfer case, third diff, new clutch gear, and stacked design of the transmission are great highlights. The body is also great, making the Rover much closer to a polished Creator Expert set than most large Technic sets. My gripes continue to be the use of ugly blue connectors.. why oh why can't black axle/pin connectors be created? Color-coordinated or body-matched inserts would be super! I'm also not a fan of the "Nano-Engine" but at this price point, can't complain too much about it. In all, I highly recommend this set. It's fun, and a great learning experience for kids and adults alike!
Date published: 2020-11-06

Rated 5 out of 5 by Robloid from Fun time I took my time with this build since it is only my second one since my childhood. I also wanted to understand how some of the modules worked, like the sequential gearbox or the forward/reverse/hi/lo gearbox. Separately they did not make sense to me how they would work until I put them together then it all made sense. At first I was also overwhelmed by the manual, which is over 450 pages and is mostly build instructions. However, the instructions are not complicated and usually only have 2 to 10 pieces per page. It is also impressive as the finished model is quite large - over 16 inches long and more than 8 inches high. I am already thinking ahead to rebuilding the model or even making a new one based on the same parts. I guess I will find out when I attempt that. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a challenging build or Land Rover fans. Now back to the store to look for my next build...
Date published: 2020-10-31

Rated 5 out of 5 by csz08 from Great thing Very challenging, however very fun to build. the interior isn't as detailed as I thought, but the outside looks better than real.
Date published: 2020-09-28

Rated 5 out of 5 by Mikekchc from The lego set that I've been waiting for! I've been a lego fan since a kid, but haven't purchased a lego for years.
