Morgan and Eli, two young Indigenous people forced to leave their family and community, are reunited in a foster home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. A portal opens to another reality. Askí, leading them to frozen and barren lands, where they meet an Ochek (a fisherman). The only hunter to provide for his starving community, Misewa, the Ochek welcomes human children and teaches them traditional methods of survival.
When the need for food is dire, they embark on a dangerous mission. Accompanied by Arik, a cheeky squirrel they caught flying on the hunting line, they try to save Misewa before winter freezes everything, including them.
