It was a little difficult for him to put some pieces together put very easy for him to see the directions as they showed step by step pictures. It took us almost an hour to complete the piece, but well worth the hour because we enjoyed every minute and the end result. The pieces are very sturdy and connect perfectly. My son is always dropping the toy and only about 2 to 3 pieces break apart , so it's very easy to put back. My son loves it and is a very happy kid! Let me start by saying it's like any other build-able toy set. He did need help building it, but my 8 year old would have been fine on his own. It's cute, and has stayed together well but hasn't seen any heavy play. Assembly was hard work. If you buy this for an eight year old, plan to help them assemble. One recommendation that helped us a lot was organizing the pieces by type before beginning. Even after that it took about an hour and a half. But the satisfaction with the completed work is gratifying. Because we have three children of varying ages, we know eventually we will lose the Great ball because it doesn't affix to the Charizard... so that is the only thing we could say we wish was different.
