It works well on a carpet or floor. If you have a train table, it only works on the flat track. It does not have the power to go uphill. That was a bit of a disappointment for the kids. The motor was powerful enough to get the job done, and the battery was easy to install. The engine colors are nice, with good details on the side, like the curtains and SCC logo. This engine also fit on my son's wooden tracks, although it was too wide to fit through some of the specialty track/building pieces we own, and didn't go around corners well. I know it's meant for Trackmaster, not the wooden railway, but my son likes playing all engines on both kinds of track. Getting the additional cargo car is nice, but I would have liked to see the door open, or the top open for loading, or some kind of feature. A big win in my book! However, before I could hand it off to my anxiously awaiting 4.5yo, l needed a Phillips head screwdriver to open the engine compartment and 2 &quot;AAA&quot; batteries. We don't have the TrackMaster Track, but a wooden Thomas set from a few years ago. While the Motorized Engine doesn't flow as smoothly on the wooden track as I assume it does on the TrackMaster, it certainly does the job. The only issue is the Engine not having enough steam to make it up and over the bridge - but again, the track is not designed around this Engine so I simply removed the bridge from the equation. When not using it on the track, my son is racing it across the kitchen (which it does effortlessly, abeit a bit noisily) and it even rolls across the carpet. This does scratch up pretty easy when it's in the toy box after a while. My son does play pretty rough with his trains and it holds up really well play wise, no broken peices. The batteriemail life seems to exceed past versions which is great.
