It's great that instructions are included to make the set into the figure eight as shown on the package. The track pieces are marked to make this easier as well. The track pieces connect to other sets as well, expanding the play options. The track pieces can be tricky for a 3 year old, I have to help connect them. The Bulstrode barge doesn't actually do the talking, the speaker is in the bridge piece. Not a deal breaker, but not as cool as the trains that have the speaker built in. On that note, the included Percy is battery powered (batteries not included) so races around the track, but strangely doesn't interact with the Bulstrode voice. We have a Interactive Thomas (sold separately) that we tested out and Bulstrode talks to Thomas. It would have been much cooler if the included Percy had this option as well. I knocked off a star due to these disappointments. We set the train up for our three year old on a kids train table that we already have. I was a bit nervous about assembly but the diagram included was very clear. The tracks are clearly labeled underneath so unboxing and putting the set together only took about ten minutes. The bridge talks and plays music at the push of a button and the batteries are included. The train uses two triple A batteries and the those batteries were not included. Once installed, it runs along the tracks easily at the push of a button. Children can interact with the play set by making the bridge go up and down, or pretending to load and unload the play cargo onto the included train car. The set also includes a toy boat so children can pretend to load cargo from the train to the boat. This set is a good fit for creating interaction and stirring the imagination of a toddler who loves trains.
Date published: 2024-07-13

Rated 4 out of 5 by Lilly from Highly engaging and fun to experiment with [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] With our little one obsessing about trains and enjoying watching Thomas on TV, we thought this toy would be a good choice for her. Yet, we were quite surprised by how much and how dynamically she has played with it so far! To start, the intentionally designed play set mechanisms add a lot of obvious fun to an otherwise simple experience. Being able to stop and start the train on the line via a big switch is great. The other switch for raising and lowering the bridge is also very neat, and I appreciate that the set easily allows children to maneuver the bridge itself up and down, vs having to use the switch, as it may take them a little while to get a hang of that. The set also plays audio when moving the bridge, and periodically when playing (it does "go to sleep" after about 5 mins of inactivity). It does mention having an interactivity feature with the ability to talk to the engines, though unfortunately (and surprisingly) the included Percy engine doesn't have this feature. We don't have an interactive engine yet, so I can't speak to how much enjoyability this provides. Beyond the intended play measures, our daughter loves that Percy can move on both carpet and hard floor. This provides a whole new way to play. Percy also doesn't seem affected by being pushed by hand (when his motor is turned off) - this was a relief as we didn't want to discourage her method of play or cause the engine's motor to be broken. On this same note she has experimented a lot with putting other vehicles/objects on the track to see how they behave. Upon receiving this set we were surprised by the size of Percy. Prior to this we had the modern wooden Thomas engines and expected this set to be the same. Though the overall size is much larger here, I'm glad to report that the track width is about the same between this set's plastic track and standard wooden track. This adds a lot to the play value and being able to experiment with all sorts of wild combinations. It's also worth mentioning that this set fits on an average-sized toy train table, with room to spare. The two biggest gripes we have are the difficulty for getting the train car on to the engine (via a hook), and the use of a switch to turn Percy on and off. The hook for the train car is made in a way that it comes off too easily, yet is too challenging for my daughter to reconnect herself. It's very frustrating and we typically don't use it at all. Magnets, or an alternative system would be preferred. As for Percy's switch: it's a relatively large sliding switch on the top of the engine. Moving the switch itself isn't an issue, though it is a bit challenging to properly get the train inline on the track since the wheels move relatively quickly. It certainly took our daughter some practice, though she has been able to overcome this. Still, I feel like using a button to turn the engine on/off would have made it easier.
Date published: 2024-07-13

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tbnist03 from Excellent addition to Thomas Railway [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My sons love this addition to their railway. I grew up around trains, train toys, and even met Thomas the train in person a few times, so when I had the chance to get this set I was very excited to add it to my family's toy collection. The very first thing I noticed when I took it out of the shipping box was how expressive the characters are! Percy and Bulstrode have taken on a more modern facelift from my old train sets, with fun adorable faces that really show off their emotions. The packaging is very attractive, it's colorful, greets your eyes immediately with cheerful characters and really shows off the items. You don't even have to take it out of it's packaging and there's already so much you can see and do, it's very interactive with moving parts and plenty of lights and sounds. Fun aside, I appreciate just being able to see the product as well when displayed like this. It helps me know what I'm getting. Taking it out of the box wasn't a chore thanks to its rather frustration-free packaging. There's a perforated cardboard door in the back that easily opens for quick access to most of the accessories. For the top displayed bridge part it was just a couple snips of tape and three easy to reach zip ties. The cardboard pretty much completely unfolds on itself for easy removal. I admit I had a slight pause when looking at the 2 round pieces that held down the ship Bulstrode (and one one the back of the bridge), simply because I had never seen that type of connector before (not sure what it's called? Basically a plastic screw). But when I looked at it up close I noticed it had an arrow on it telling me to twist it (a little hard to see depending on your lighting), So I gave it 3 turns (it's shape has a gripping part for your finger, but it requires no strength or dexterity) and it simply popped right out freeing the item. Awesome. And just like that everything was out! The instruction manual is fully illustrated, with large photos in full color. For the most part not much assembly is needed but it shows you where to put the batteries (It includes two AA’s, already installed in the bridge, But you will need to supply your own two AAAs for the train). It shows you where the different interactive elements/buttons/levers are and how to use the switch to make the train move. It even had a little troubleshooting guide in case you encounter any issues with it, I appreciate that as this is my first time having an electronic Thomas set I've only had wood before. But other than needing a screw to put the battery in the train the rest of assembly is just snapping the tracks together and most will probably figure it out without ever taking a look at the instructions. Now back to the toy! I have a lot of nostalgia for all the fisher price sets I had growing up. I've always appreciated how detailed they were, even down to the finest designs in the molding. I was so happy to see they've kept with that tradition. The bridge Tower has bricks and crown molding and little gears and other details molded into it and on the ground you can make out the shape of some trees and foliage. Personally, I would have loved to have seen just how creative they could have gone with animals and other surprise details, but that would be over and beyond haha. Percy the train engine is a nice size to hold in your hard, and easy for little hands too. He has some really fun aquatic designs on his sides as well, showing fish playfully jumping out of the water beside him and even a surfing crab. The train tracks themselves are pretty cool too, I'm used to the wood ones but these ones are bright and colorful, have wood grain designs in its molding, and snapped together pretty easily (Really little ones might need a bit of help). If you look closely you'll even find a few other fun details in the molding such as hand tools or guides for the switches. The tracks are interchangeable with all other Thomas tracks as well (other than the classic wood), which is really good to know. I admit when I was first looking at training sets it seemed a little overwhelming at first not knowing what goes with what but knowing that they're all able to work together makes purchasing decisions a lot easier. I can't wait to get a table and start combining multiple sets to see what we can create. The original loop design includes an area that “Y” branches off to a dead end so if you get additional sets you can attach them there so it can all be connected without having to change the layout (or perhaps be a little wild and derail to explore the open world from there haha). But even with just this set as our starter there's plenty of pieces to make a fun complete loop layout with inclines, bridges, underpasses, and more, so it feels very complete and fun. It even has a water element, so by including the free ranging ship you can really make your whole area an open world interactive play area, no need to just stick to the track! A few accessories are included to further enrich play such as cargo that can be hauled by both the train and ship. Though I'm sure my family is also going to have a lot of fun exploring what other household things are going to become that days cargo haul. Overall this is a wonderful Thomas set from FP. Not only is it a great connectable/expandable addition to one's growing train layout, it's fully complete as a stand alone set or starter set, as it offers many of the classically fun elements of any good train layout, with plenty of additional “fun” features as well. It encourages play on and off the track for hours of more open ended play and creativity. Super happy to have this!
Date published: 2024-07-12

Rated 5 out of 5 by Kim J from Amazing Train Set [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This train set is AMAZING!!
