The wheels are plastic. The box is easy to open without the wires and clasps that make present opening difficult. We use it as an outside toy. He fills it with rocks, dirt, water, snow. It has been through several seasons. It&rsquo;s been played with and well loved and still looks new. Solid metal, sturdy and hours of play. The kids have been loading up everything from rocks and dirt to the dog to haul across the yard. The wheels roll smoothly across the gravel and uneven grass which is impossible to find in a toy these days.
