My son was very excited to receive this set. It took him a bit to get started as there are a lot of pieces that come with this set. He said he had a bit of trouble getting started. But, after a few minutes of working with the pieces, he was on a roll. He spent about an hour to an hour and a half building one of the models in the instruction booklet. He loved his finished project. It was nice to have something for him to play with other than video games. These STEM projects are great for learning. This is a really neat set, and incorporates a lot of dimensions. I particularly enjoyed the magnetic component to transfer momentum to different marbles. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because the instructions are a little unclear. The towers require some assembly that was difficult for my 9 year old to do, I'm not sure why it isn't manufactured as one piece already as there's no reason to ever take them apart. The instructions on how to build it are a little unclear as well, particularly in where to add the floating platforms into the clear walls. I would think this is a great toy for older kids (maybe 10-11 and up) to do independently, but this is not something that my 9 year old could do on her own (granted, that's just my child). It's a lot of fun though, and the pieces offer a lot of versatility. We have the basic Gravitrax starter set which our kids (2 and 5) have lots of fun with. The oldest will follow the diagrams or build his own arrangements and spend long periods of time playing with the set. So when we found out we were going to get the Gravitrax Pro starter set, everyone was excited. When we received the box, I thought it was going to be like the basic set in that you could start building tracks right away. This is not the case. There are a lot of pieces that need to be assembled before that can happen. It isn&rsquo;t too hard to do, but it will take a good amount of time. The new parts allow for much more complex and interesting configurations, and that means a lot more assembling time. The way tracks are suspended above each other can be a little delicate and can fall apart as the marble rolls down, so there&rsquo;s some extra maintenance to do every few runs. We built the hardest one in the manual and could not get the marbles to make it to the finish. I&rsquo;m not sure why they would lose momentum toward the end. Whether it was a design flaw or user error, it was a bit disappointing after spending such a long time building it. That being said, it&rsquo;s an excellent set for people who really want a more advanced marble course set, meaning someone that finds joy in the assembly process. There&rsquo;s a certain similarity in the satisfaction you get making these marble courses that&rsquo;s like putting together a scale model. I would recommend it for older kids and adults. There is a lot of delicate placement of track parts that are better suited for someone with good dexterity and patience. This starter set has LOTS of different ramps, drops, and chutes to create some really fun models and mazes. There is also an excellent app that allows you to design your own models on the computer before building to see if your ideas will work (there's actually a physics engine that shows shows your run on the app). The app also includes 3D instructions for models that you can build. Imagine Lego instructions that you can rotate/zoom/adjust to see where your pieces should go exactly. However, there are a few caveats: 1 - The initial set up and assembly will take you awhile. There are a dozen or so towers that must be snapped together and around 50 little hexagons that have to be punched out of the board that you attach the pieces to. This took me and my nine-year-old daughter about an hour. 2. While the app is good, the more complicated models require quite a bit of setup and patience to build. The largest one took me and my daughter almost two hours to complete, and even though she was having fun, she lost interest until I finished it for her. Once it was done, she played with it for quite a long time. 3. This box is BIG - think of a box like the board game &quot;Ticket To Ride&quot; and double its thickness. It will take up a lot of space on your shelf. You'll also probably want to organize the pieces in baggies. The kit includes some, but it will make building easier if you sort out the pieces. My review and opinion on the set are my own and not based on the fact that it was given to me. Having never had one of the Gravitrax sets I was excited to be getting one. Upon opening the box the plastic parts were separated into different bags and cardboard base pieces, as well as the bigger plastic pieces, were in the box. The instructions of course were included. Once I went thru the parts list to be sure I had everything, I set out to create the first track layout in the book. The instructions are very well laid out in that it shows you exactly what parts you need and where they go. If you start with the first track and work your way up to the more advanced tracks, you will understand how everything goes together along the way, so when you get to the advanced layouts it is not so confusing. What is nice is that each layout has the parts that will be needed. So for step one, there is a list of parts and where they go. Then step two has the parts needed and where they go...So if you gather the parts for each step, you will know you are done with that step when you have used all the parts you gathered. The parts from the prior steps are faded out a little on the layout to help you, so you don&rsquo;t get confused. As I mentioned this is the first set I have ever owned and it was not too difficult to see where all the parts went and how it all went together... The parts are of good quality and with reasonable care, they should last a long time. I am a big kid at heart and I am having a great time with this set and I am sure you will also. The possibilities are endless and there are other expansion sets you can add to create more fun! The instructions are easy to follow and I like that they diagram is set up like Legos; my kids can look at the picture and set it up with some guidance. My oldest (9) can pretty much do everything on her own. The taller stacking pieces were a bit fiddly to put together at first, but once they&rsquo;re together you don&rsquo;t have to take them apart again for separate builds. The different heights of the tracks allow so many different builds and it&rsquo;s so much fun to create new ones.
