It is very helpful to have a choice of different flow rates when it comes to bottle nipples. I prefer to start with the slowest rate and work up from there. I try to match the bottle nipple flow rate with the rate that my breastmilk flows at that time. In the first few months, I have a very fast breastmilk flow so I try to match this with my baby's bottle so that he does not form a preference and will keep feeding from both the breast and the bottle. It is nice to have the option to be able to customize this to the needs of you and your baby. I try to give my son a bottle every few days to make sure that he will keep liking and taking one. This helps provide me with some freedom because I am a second time mom with a toddler to run after as well! I have tried a few different bottles/nipples and my son definitely liked this one. I planned to exclusively breastfeed for at least 3 months but it took a very long time for my milk supply to come in after my daughter was born. Luckily, I had some bottles on hand but she always had so much spit up with the bottles we were using. My daughter is currently 4 months old and we still use bottles for supplementation. She still has a ton of spit up and gas after taking a bottle. We tried this Philips Avent Natural Medium Flow Nipple and my daughter took to the nipple just like she always does. This nipple has a swirled type design inside the nipple that&rsquo;s different from other avent nipples that I have seen. When I burped her she had no gas and absolutely no spit up the first time we used this nipple! That was a first! We have used it a few times and she still barely has any spit up and minimal gas if any. My daughter still prefers a slower nipple, not quite sure why but we love this sytle nipple! It&rsquo;s great to have a variety of these nipples on hand since she&rsquo;s growing so fast and her preferences on nipple flow will change. Put some food in front of her, and she'll go to town. We've been lucky enough to have no problems going between breast and bottle, so I feel like saying that this nipple flow is too fast means that it's TOO FAST. She ended up wearing about half the bottle's worth of milk (even during a pace feed), due to the fact that too much milk was getting into her mouth at once. The packaging indicated that the nipples are for 3+ month, and I would certainly never give them to a baby any younger than that -- and I've replaced them in her rotation with slower-flow nipples. As with all Philips Avent products, the design is beautiful and practical, and these nipples are incredibly easy to use with Philips bottles. I think I'll stash these away for a few more months and see if a slightly older baby would take to them better. They are soft and easy for my breastfed baby to latch onto. He is now 14 weeks old and we introduced the size 3 variable flow around 11-12 weeks of age. He latches onto them without difficulty. Since he is primarily breastfed, the 3+ flow has been a bit fast for him and we do notice more milk spillage from his mouth as he is sucking. This thankfully does not seem affect him gas or colic-wise and we have not had any issue with either while using these nipples. It may just be me, but I struggled to notice a change in flow when I tried to rotate the bottle or adjust for variable flow that the nipples advertises. Clearer instructions would have been preferred. I'm pleased we can alternate between breast and bottle without any difficulty, however, we will most likely stick to just the size 1 to keep the flow semi-similar to breastfeeding. We might consider switching back to the size 3 variable flow in a couple weeks to see if this makes an improvement (if he was just still a bit too young for the flow). I love that the nipple has a bit wider of a base to be more like a breast. It is SUPER soft and flexible and the &quot;comfort petals&quot; really do add to that soft feeling as well as the flexibility. The anti-colic Airflex vent is super effective, to the point that I could see and hear the air flowing through, instead of going in my baby's tummy! I will say though that you need to be careful when attaching the nipple to the bottle ring to make sure that it is flush with the ring (and not below it.) I like that Avent makes several different flows as different babies have different needs. This particular nipple is listed as being for babies 3+ plus, but I found that the flow was much too fast for my 4 month old. I don't feel that this is a realistic flow for a breastfed baby, but that is the only reason why I gave this nipple 4 stars. If the flow were a little slower (i.e. more like that which would come from a breast) it would be a 4 star for sure, because I love everything else about it! The Natural flow nipple are a high quality, sturdy nipple that do not leak. We bought several different types of bottles to try for her and were having problems with gas and fussiness. I thought the problems were with her formula and asked about changing her. The pediatrician asked if she made noises while eating, which she did. She suggested before switching formulas to try different bottles that it sounded more like a latching problem. And honestly the Philips Avent Natural with Variflow Nipples was the best fit. She had no trouble latching on at all. The noises I thought were cute stopped and her tummy troubles and gas ended. Finally she was eating! I think because they are made to be more natural and breastlike it made it easier for her. I received this bottle nipple from the weeSpring Parent Panel and I love the fact that the nipples can be changed out as your baby grows. I didn&rsquo;t actually realize this until the nipples began collapsing on her while she was eating. I found out that when this happens your baby is pulling too hard trying to get more formula and it&rsquo;s time to move up the flow with the nipples. She is now on level 3 nipples and we do not have any problems at all. I love that these nipples grow with your baby but all other parts of the bottle can be reused, it makes for saving money in the long run. I really do recommend Avent Natural bottles with Variflow nipples for all babies. They&rsquo;re so easy for your little one to latch on to and easy on the tummy by lessening the chances of too much air getting to their tummies. We have used Avent nipples in the past but the Natural Variflow Nipple design made the transition to taking a bottle much easier for the baby. The shape of the nipple and the flow design worked great and after a few tries the baby figured out how to use the bottle! I also loved this nipple design because it did not cause the baby to get gassy or upset his stomach with excess air flow. We have tried other brands but this one was by far the easiest for the baby to use. The different flow levels for the nipple are great for growing babies to transition to a faster flow as the get bigger. The instructions for this product say that it can be washed in the dishwasher but I don't have a good way of securing it safely in place so I just wash by hand. It is very easy and quick to just wash with your fingers. I was happy to receive these because we already use these nipples. All 3 kids have used them with no issues and we have found them to be very reasonably priced. They are easy to clean either in hot soapy water or in the dishwasher. We have never used them with a formula bottle, only breastmilk, so I cannot comment on how formula flows through them. We prefer these over other brand of nipples we have tried-they do not collapse and are easier to clean (no special brushes needed!). As a new mom, my husband helps out for night feedings. We have been using the Avent Natural nipple and love it. It took us a few tries to get our daughter comfortable with the nipple, but once she used it she has no problem bottle-feeding. The design of the nipple works just fine, and the flow that comes out is just enough to satisfy her for a feeding. I would recommend this product to family and friends.
