My baby was already 2 months old when I was given these nipples to try. She has been drinking from a bottle since she was a week old due to me having to supplement with formula. I had completed switch to formula when I started using these nipples. This was a transition from the classic nipple shape to this nipple shape. The nipple was bigger than the classic nipple shape she was used to. My baby was born small at 6 pounds 6 ounces. If she was still a newborn, then I think this nipple may have been too big for her mouth. Even at 2 months with a bigger mouth, she kept spitting it out when I gave it to her the first time. On the second try, she accepted it and was drinking from it with no problem. I don't like that the base of the nipple presses against her nose when I'm feeding her, but it doesn't seem to bother her. The flow is slow for the first flow nipple. It is so slow that I cannot shake a drop from it to test the temperature on my wrist and have to squeeze the nipple to get a drop out. My baby has tried the 0, 0m+, and 1m+ flows. She drinks slower from the slower flow nipples, but doesn't seem to have a preference of flow rate. The silicone is thicker than the nipple I was using and I like that it doesn't collapse when she sucks on it. My baby doesn't really have an issue with colic or gas so I cannot say if it helps. I can say that I notice she burps less with these nipples. Overall I like the quality of these nipples, but the shape does not seem to be the best for my baby.
Date published: 2018-01-11

Rated 5 out of 5 by DNmom from More natural bottle feeding [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The new nipples I got from the weeSpring Parent Panel are fantastic. My baby did not show a preference for the new over the old nipples, but I sure did! The new ones are softer, more natural, and act more like the actual breast when baby is drinking. I also noticed that my baby was sucking in a more rhythmic pattern when using the new nipples rather than the old, again, more similar to nursing.
Date published: 2018-01-11

Rated 3 out of 5 by Fo6212 from Used on an EBF baby I used the Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple to feed my 3 month exclusively breastfed daughter. I was given this bottle nipple to try as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel. I appreciate that I was sent the First Flow Nipple as I was taught by an IBCLC that breastfed babies should always use the slowest flow when taking bottles, so a bottle preference is not developed. My daughter did not have any issues with taking the first flow nipple; however, I did notice a leak when feeding her. As a breastfeeding mother, a leak is the last thing I would like to see when using a bottle as my liquid gold is being wasted. Once I was done feeding my DD I did not notice an increase of colic or gas which was nice. While my DD finished most of the bottle, I would not choose to use this nipple again due to the leaking I experienced.
Date published: 2018-01-11

Rated 4 out of 5 by CWMB from Supplementing mom looking for the right flow [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Having to supplement a newborn can be very nerve racking when you're trying to balance between breastfeeding and bottles. Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple was the third brand & fourth nipple I tried with my child. The first bottle I tried was great for my first born, but after the first day with my second I already noticed a difference in latching on the breast, so those bottles were immediately shelved. The second brand I tried helped with the latch, but was awkwardly positioned, sometimes leaked & had a faster flow than I liked. My lactation nurse told me to give 2 ounces over 10 minutes, which was a challenge, especially when allow other people to feed the baby. Once I received the Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple & matching bottles some things definitely became easier. The nipple size is 'zero' instead of the '1' that comes standard with most of the bottles I've used. The smaller size allowed for easier paced feeding which had been a concern, especially while anxiously watching other people feed the baby. The nipple has not leaked & is well positioned. The only issue I'm starting to notice is bubbles in the nipple from my little ones suckling. I may switch things up to see if its causing extra gas but overall I am satisfied with the product. I'm a first time mom and my son is almost 3 months old. I'm nursing, but started pumping and giving my baby one bottle a day when he was 4 weeks old so he would get used to taking a bottle. Once i go back to work, he will need to be able to eat from a bottle. I really like the quality of the Avent nipples and its so nice to have different flow strengths to interchange with the bottles. It is really important, however, to have dad give him a pumped bottle of breast milk from time to time so I can sleep or leave the house! For us, having a variety of nipple sizes for bottles is crucial. I have an overactive let down, so he is used to guzzling the milk very quickly. At this point, he got a bit frustrated with the Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple. I think it was because the milk didn't come out as quickly as he is used to. We usually use size 2 nipples. But I would recommend this nipple to a mom who has a slower supply or who is giving a first bottle. We definitely wanted to start out slow so that he would be more likely to like the breast than the bottle! He seemed a bit less gassy than normal after using this nipple, so that also seems like a good feature. Overall I think this would everyone a nipple we'd use if I had lower flow or if we were just starting bottles. It was a struggle to find one that he really liked. With my current second baby, I thought it would be easier because she's easier to handle and she seems to accept any new changes I force on her.. ie. sleep pattern, swaddling vs non-swaddling, breast milk vs formula. When I had the opportunity to try out the Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple for free thanks to weeSpring Parent Panel, I was excited. Nothing compares to a mother's nipples, but out of the package I could tell that the first flow nipple was very soft and flexible. I could move it and twist it with no resistance at all. After carefully washing the nipples and bottle, I first fed my baby with the Philips first flow nipple when she was a little over 2 months old. (Washing the nipple was pretty easy but there are still little crevices that need to be taken care with a small bottle brush) I don't know if it made a difference but the first feeding was at night time and she was not very pleased at first that something other than my nipple was being placed in her mouth. She cried a little and tried to spit out the nipple. It took a couple minutes but once the milk started flowing, she latched on and happily drank all the milk. The only complaint from her (that I could gather) was that she could not chomp down and pull the nipple with her mouth (because after all, the nipple may be soft but it is not stretchy enough for her to pull) I am perfectly okay with this as that's something I have been trying to get her to stop when I nurse her. I had much better luck with her during the day time when she was more awake and not half asleep and cranky. As for gas or colic, I can't really claim that the nipple was able to relieve her of any of those symptoms but she has been grunting less at night time after her feeding. Not sure of which bottle to use? As a first time mommy I didn't know which bottle to choose when I was creating my registry. I decided to put different bottles on my registry and see which ones I received. I read many reviews on different bottles but they all had their pros and cons. I received my first email from weeSpring Parent Panel notifying me that I was being sent the new Philips Avent Natural First Flow Nipple bottles...FOR FREE. I had just started giving my daughter a bottle a day to get her familiar with one for day care, so this could not have come at a better time. I noticed she was getting belly aches and full of gas and air bubbles after other brand named bottles. When the Avent bottles showed up I washed and used them instantly. These nipples are designed to reduce colic and discomfort which is exactly what they did. Since I have been using these nipples she does not seem uncomfortable after feeding off a bottle. The nipple has the natural feeling like a breast would, and the nipple stays sturdy so it does not collapse while drinking. The nipple flow seems to be nice and steady. Not to fast and not to slow. My daughters seems very comfortable with the speed of the flow. As a parent I love how the bottle is shaped making it easy to hold on to and easy to take a part to clean and put back together. I am so glad I got to try these new nipples out. I have now packed my other bottles away and will only be using these new Avent Natural First Flow Nipple bottles from here on out. This nipple helped me make this possible! With a large surface area, like the breast, it doesn’t confuse my baby when he goes to use the bottle instead of breastfeeding. He latches on just as if I was nursing him. It is also so helpful that the nipples come in different sizes. When my baby was first born and we tried bottles he was spitting half of it out (and who wants to waste that liquid gold?) then I found these nipples that have multiple sizes and grow with my baby! We started with a small size and it worked perfectly for him and truly mimics the breastfeeding experience instead of gushing out too quickly for him. This also helped with his gassyness which in turn helped with his fussieness. Before he was fequently spitting up and also crying from gas pain in his stomach (I could often hear it, it was so bad) but these nipples helped to ease the gas and make feeding times and afterwords much more enjoyable. I am so grateful I found these nipples, so this mama can get a break every now and then!!! I’ve been using the 0 flow rate for my 12 week old for a couple of weeks now. While it seems intended for preemies and newborns, it works great for my overzealous daughter! She is mostly breastfed currently, so she’s used to a slower flow and needing to work for her food. We try to feed her sitting upright with the bottle parallel, to force her to keep working for her dinner! These nipples work well in that position, though she does tend to tilt her head back more than with smaller based nipples. We had been using bottles with smaller based newborn nipples prior to this and she transitioned to the broader base fantastically. It does keep her lips in a more open position, which is good for working on her latch for when she’s on the breast! My baby is a bad latcher to begin with, so I’m very appreciative of being able to bottle feed her in a way that encourages her to maintain a natural latch even while being fed at school. She does manage to still drink too quickly and begins to choke- usually about once every other bottle. I also have flow rate 1 and 2 nipples, but have stuck exclusively to these slower flow nipples since she does still choke sometimes. They claim anti-colic vent technology, but I can’t particularly speak to this. My baby has not has any trouble with colic, though she doesn’t burp much with these nipples, so she must be getting little air. I would absolutely recommend these nipples, especially for babies who will also be breastfed! It's been five years since the middle kiddo was born, and I've forgotten a ton. However, I do know that the other two took to a bottle easily, and it didn't matter what bottle. We had a few types, and I could interchange them with no issue. This third though...super stubborn. I experimented with a dozen brands of different shapes, textures, and flows, including the Philips Natural First Flow we got from the weeSpring Parent Panel. She completely rejected bottles that the other two took. In the end, the Philips one was one of the only two she'll take. Like formula or pacifiers, I think it's really hard to understand why a baby takes to one brand/shape/taste over another, and it often feels like there's no rhyme or reason. However, to me, the nipple feels softer and more flexible, like a real nipple than hard plastic. We are first time parents and, thus, have been experimenting with various products to discover what we like best and what seems best for our baby. Our baby is almost three months old. Within the past month we learned that she has acid reflux and allergies so feeding times were often very stressful, as they included fussing and figuring out what would make our baby most happy and comfortable. Our baby seemed to take to these nipples immediately. The wider shape of the top allowed her to easily latch and the soft breast-like feel of the nipple made her latch seem more comfortable and natural. Our baby seemed to fuss far less when using these bottles and, thus, we assume that they helped relieve her of colic and gas. One concern we had as parents was that, despite using the nipple flow specific to her age, she seemed to be able to drink from the bottles very quickly. Occasionally this seemed to trigger her acid reflux and other times it didn't. However, I believe our baby liked the ease and steadiness of the flow she was able to receive from these bottles because she sometimes appears frustrated if the flow seems too slow.
Date published: 2018-01-09

Rated 5 out of 5 by JanelleM from Great nipple for newborns! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] As a first time parent, everything is trial and error. I was lucky enough to receive the Philips Avent First Flow Nipples as part of my participation on the Weespring Parent Panel and I was excited to tryout a new nipple with my little man. My son is almost 3 months old and he has been taking a bottle almost since day one. First of all, there are so many different choices of nipples and bottles on the market, it is completely overwhelming. And then each time your child eats, you wonder if they have hiccups because the formula is coming out too fast or if they ingested too much air. When we were sent these Philips Avent First Flow Nipples, I was more than willing to try them to see if we could decrease my sons spit up and constant hiccuping. The first time he latched on, it took him a few moments because the base was wider than the ones he had been using previously. He played around with it for a few minutes before he actually started sucking. I think it was just because it was a different feel than he was used to so it took him a minute to adjust. But once he did, it was easy and efficient. He barely spit up at all (when before, he was soaking a bib at every feeding) and the flow was just right for him; not too fast or slow. We tried different flow nipples in the past to see what might work best for our son but when we used the faster nipples, he would spit up and have really bad hiccups. This one was perfect for him (he is almost 3 months old) and really reduced the issues we were experiencing with feeding up until now. Overall, we really liked these nipples and they were great for our newborn (preemie) son. The flow was perfect for him and allowed him to drink a bottle without dealing with extreme hiccups when he finished. He also seriously reduced his spit up when we changed bottles/nipples and I think that is because he is ingesting less air with the Philips Avent bottles and nipples. I would highly recommend this product to anyone looking for a easy to use, quick to clean, effective bottle for their little one!
Date published: 2018-01-09

Rated 3 out of 5 by Megh1 from Avent Natural Flow Nipple I received this product from the weeSpring Parent Panel. The nipples looked really pretty, but I felt that the shape wasn't great for my baby. She isn't great at taking bottles in general, but this one she didn't even attempt to suck on it. She just rejected it from the start. The faster flow nipple was a bit too fast, dripping milk out a lot when I tipped the bottle up. And the slower flow nipple was fine, but again, the shape just didn't work for my baby. I've used other nipples/bottles, and even if she doesn't drink the milk, she at least will play with the nipple a bit and try. When it was time to go back to work, we had to send my son to daycare which means we had to find the right bottle and nipple. Fortunately, my son loved the Philips Avent Natural Baby Bottle and first flow nipple. The nipple was a good rate of flow for him. It wasn’t too fast where he was choking or it was leaking and was let too slow where he got frustrated. Works well so i can still nurse at night. The only thing i didn’t like is it didn’t match the shape of my breast so took him awhile to get used too. After my milk didn’t come for several days and a return back to the hospital with preeclampsia I just couldn’t do it. So the search for the perfect bottle was on. We tried several bottles and several different types of nipples. My daughter was very gassy, spit up a lot and seemed to have colic at night. We were told to add cereal to her bottle but none of the nipples seemed to let the cereal through. Feeding my little one was not as enjoyable as I’d hoped and we all ended up frustrated. Several days later I received this Avent bottle nipple to try as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel. We opened the boxes, washed the bottles and tried them immediately. We were shocked that the cereal and formula came out of the nipple with ease. The nipple was very soft and easy for her to drink with. There was no fussy baby! She was happy and full. It was the first time she’d ate in a while and seem content. She didn’t spit up and didn’t seem too gassy. We have been using these nipples for over a week now and we are extremely pleased. These nipples and bottles are super easy to clean. We appreciate that there aren’t a ton of pieces. They are easy to hold and carry around. The lids fit snuggly on the bottle. On one hand it’s great because it allows you to shake the bottle once you’ve added the formula without touching the nipple. On the other hand the lid is often a little difficult to remove. It’s probably the only downside but one I don’t mind because it won’t spill! We are very happy with these nipples and so thankful we were able to try them!
Date published: 2018-01-08

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from The only nipple my picky baby accepted! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] My four month old had never taken a bottle until these nipples and bottles came along. I've tried other brands, and while they worked, they didn't end my baby's reflux. I received this Avent Natural Nipple, First Flow – Stage 0 to go with Avent Natural bottles. My daughter took to these nipples and bottles fast! The natural latch was easy for my baby to latch on to. The anti-colic Airflex vent technology definitely vented air away from the baby, as I could tell my baby had much less gas. Usually my daughter will stop drinking half way through a bottle because of the gas, but she guzzled 4 oz. at a time with no issues. There never was nipple collapse, due to the spiral design, so no baby getting upset. Also as a tired parent, I'm so happy with how easy they are to clean. I’ve had no problem hand washing, or throwing them in the dishwasher. They were very easy to remove and reattach to the bottles when needed. I've used these in a competitor’s sanitizer with no issues. So far these nipples look great longer than other brands. I had been exclusively breast feeding, but we always knew we had to bottle train for daycare. Well—this product was a total game changer! My baby was struggling with bottle feeding, and we were feeling the pressure of the clock. We had tried close to 10 different nipples, including old model Avent which were much too hard and difficult for her to mouth. She would often push her tongue out, losing her latch completely. This would also push the nipple out of her mouth, causing a lot of frustration and milk flying everywhere! Well, this new nipple changed everything! She immediately took to it on the first try, and with no crying! She downed the entire bottle in one shot, a true miracle! I happen to have a fast flow, so this nipple was a little slow for my baby, but she still took it like a champ! I would recommend a size 2 or 3 if you have a fast flow like I do, it was much easier for my baby and reduced her frustration. It also seemed to help her gassy tummy, as she has been less upset and more giggling during feedings since the switch. If you have a baby that struggles with a bottle, or even one that doesn’t, this is a great option. The extra soft material and spiral design make a HUGE difference! Highly recommend! Even though I received this item at no cost as a member of the weeSpring Parent Panel, that had no impact on my review!
