Philips AVENT SCF635/27 Classic Variable Flow Nipple lets babies control the flow of milk like with breastfeeding, which can reduce spit-up and overeating. Philips AVENT's anti-colic valve flexes to keep air in the bottle and out of your baby's tummy, a feature that reduces fussing and colic. In a clinical trial, two-week-old infants fed with a Philips AVENT Classic bottle experienced less colic than babies fed with a conventional bottle, with the greatest difference seen at night. Designed for babies at least 3 months old, the slot hole design allows you to change the flow of milk, provides an extra fast flow and accommodates thicker liquids. Simply turn the bottle to line up the I, II or III marking with your baby's nose to choose between slow, medium and fast flow. The nipple is made of flavorless, odorless silicone that resists discoloring and stickiness. The nipple's soft, rounded shape promotes feeding for babies who nurse from both the breast and a bottle. The Classic BPA Free nipples are dishwasher safe and can be sterilized by boiling for five minutes or by using a Philips AVENT steam sterilizer.

The only thing I was concerned with was if he would drink from a bottle. I was on the hunt for the perfect bottle and was given this bottle for being part of the weeSpring Parent Panel. I really like the idea of a variable nipple. This made the transition of being exclusively breastfed to using a bottle easier. My son preferred the 3+ months nipple and after a few attempts he drank from the bottle. This bottle is specifically for anti-colic and gas. I did not notice a significant difference in that regard, but only because before trying this bottle, he was exclusively breastfed. The bottle and the nipples are very good quality. We are also able to put rice cereal to keep his tummy a bit more full!1
Date published: 2019-05-19

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Better Days Peaceful Nights! My 6 month old was the biggest surprise of my life. Raising two wild and wonderful boys felt like the most my husband and I could ever want (or handle) so like a couple of minimalist millennials, we offloaded and gave away as many and as much of our baby items as soon as it was possible. When I found out I was pregnant with our third child there was not a bib, a baby blanket, or bottle in sight. I decided rather than having handfuls of duplicate items all over the house, I would choose better quality products and only have one or two of each item. I also had to take into consideration that this time around I wouldn't have the opportunity to stay home with baby and breastfeed, making the choice of bottle and nipple, more important than ever. In my mind a perfect bottle did not exist. They were all pretty much the same; a bit leaky, similarly difficult to clean, gave baby too much or too little milk, and promised the moon about not giving baby gas or colic. Even the latest bottle I purchased upon my little one's arrival did not exceed any of my previously held expectations. My baby was gassy, fussy, always hungry and we were feeding him around the clock. When weeSpring Parent Panel sent me the Philips Avent Anti-colic baby bottle variable flow, 4pk, I was at a point of desperation. The choice in nipple flow was a game changer for us, with the 3month + sized he was finally able to get the amount of formula he needed without having to work so hard to get it. He took to it right away and the specific shape of the nipple helped him latch securely, no more milk drips everywhere. Not to mention, the ribbed texture of the nipple itself helped prevent nipple collapse (hooray!) which is one of the most frustrating moments in feeding, especially when baby is about to fall asleep! The biggest plus for me has been the overall mood shift of my baby and consequently, our home. I thought that this baby was just more fussy than any of my previous children. He was restless at night and grumpy in the day but this bottle changed that for us. The anti-colic feeding nipples have reduced gas and discomfort in my baby, making (almost) a full night's sleep possible, he's satiated, happy, and ready for his day. If you're like me and would rather have one product that works than a handful of others that don't, I highly recommend trying Philips Avent Anti-colic baby bottle variable flow, 4pk. The price is competitive and the quality is undeniable. Thank you again weeSpring Parent Panel for sending me this bottle and nipple set that we will continue to utilize and enjoy.
Date published: 2019-05-19

Rated 5 out of 5 by maryisa05 from A nipple with options I was given the philips avent anti-colic variable flow nipple to be test out in exchange of my honest opinion thanks to the weeSpring Parent Panel. I love the nipple because it has 3 types of flows, 1,2, and 3. As a breastfeeding mom this is super helpful because sometimes the guidelines to which nipple a baby should use don't apply to a breastfed baby. My baby needs a slower flow nipple than the one recommended for his age and with these nipples I just have to turn the bottle to see which flow is good for him. The nipple doesn't have your normal hole in the middle, it's marked by a - cut and depending in which way your baby takes the nipple the opening is smaller or bigger. I like this variable flow nipple.
Date published: 2019-05-18

Rated 5 out of 5 by Jessicabt1912 from Unique and easy to use! A product that does what it says! This is an innovative, unique, easy to use nipple. Very easy to see how to position the nipple to get different rates of flow with hash marks on the side of the nipple. My son is 3 months old and has been taking a bottle for about a month. He has been on a very slow flow nipple and not yet ready to jump to the next flow, but with this nipple I was able to let him work on adjusting to a faster flow of milk but quickly rotate the bottle to slow the flow if he needed a break without having to change the nipple off the bottle to a different one, which frankly does not make a hungry baby very happy! Also very easy to clean...a lot of interesting baby gadgets are hard to clean which makes me less likely to use them honestly. My son adjusted very easily to this new nipple style and can do level 1 and 2 flow of the 3 mo size nipple. He burped after feeding which is normal for him but did not spit up after using it several times, which he usually does about 50% of the time so I do think it reduces gas in a baby's tummy. I received this product through the weeSpring Parent Panel.
Date published: 2019-05-18

Rated 5 out of 5 by TKang from Great 3-in-1 product to test which flow rate is best for baby I was given this product to try as part of the weeSpring Parent Panel. My baby is now about 3.5 months and I received this product when she hit 3 months. She has been almost exclusively breastfed and since I have returned to work we have been having a really difficult time with getting her to take the bottle. She definitely did not like the level 3 on this nipple, and starting choking and sputtering on it. Level 2 was still too fast and level 1 was better, but in the end she still refused this nipple. I think it is a really great design so that parents like me can try all 3 flow rates in one nipple without buying a bunch of nipples. However, I can see the flow becoming inconsistent for babies requiring a very slow flow nipple. My older daughter was a preemie who needed ultra preemie nipples and this would not be a product for those kind of babies. My baby does not tend to have colic/gas so I cannot speak for that, but I liked that the bottle does not leak when you don't use the anti-gas attachment. There are other brands where it leaks if you use the option of not using the anti-colic insert.
Date published: 2019-05-17

Rated 5 out of 5 by EstG from Worked well for transitioning breastfed baby to bottle! I received these nipples as a gift from the weeSpring Parent Panel. My baby is breastfed and we are trying to transition her to bottles as well, so when I received this product, I was excited. It's always a battle to get a breastfed baby to transition, so I was hopeful this product would work for her. I did not notice her spitting up or having any reflux issues, which I was also concerned would happen. I also noticed she did not spit up or choke on the milk. She was born premature, so I was also concerned the flow would be too much for her, but she easily latched to this bottle and nipple and drank away. I also liked that you can get a pack of 4, since using bottles, you have to constantly wash and sanitize bottles and buying only 2 at a time really isn't enough. So far she's loving this product, so I will continue to purchase this brand.
Date published: 2019-05-17

Rated 5 out of 5 by Tigger90503 from Good even if you don’t have Colic As a long time user of advent bottles and nipples we liked the new design. These bottles are easy to clean and we love how they have an air-free vent reducing the air that can get into the nipple. For example if you plan on only breastfeeding you might want to have some bottles for bottle feeding. Just in case there are latch issues or maybe you’ll be returning to work in a couple months and you want the right bottle for your breastmilk storage and feeding. Bottles are also a good way to allow someone else to feed baby too. Whatever the reason it’s good to have a few bottles on hand so when you’re looking for the right bottle for your baby I can honestly say I would recommend this bottle with the variable flow anti-colic nipples. The great part about these bottle nipples are that they allow milk to flow at your baby’s pace. The bottle we were given to test out these nipples was the Philips Avent Anti-Colic bottle with the Air Free Vent. These Variable Flow nipples are not compatible with the Air Free Vent but the nipples themselves are anti-colic so you won’t have to worry about excess air. The design of the nipple is great too, it’s a bit wider at the top than the usual rounded off nipples from other brands and other Avent Models. My baby took to this nipple right away without any issues. My only complaint is that the instructions for the nipple says you can turn the bottle to adjust the flow but I couldn’t figure this out. There’s no where to rotate or turn the nipple or collar on the bottle. You can clearly see the markings on the nipple for the 1, 2 and 3 stage but I couldn’t turn anything to switch this. Overall it says these are good for an adjustable flow rate, my baby is 6 months right now and she’s only tried other brand stage 2 nipples which leak when turned over and when I shake up the formula or breastmilk in the bottle. What I really love about these is that even though they can accommodate a larger flow they don’t leak! I can also use these for thicker liquids as stated on the packaging which is fantastic for the feeds when I add a teaspoon of her baby oatmeal. The nipple does not get clogged at all and she is able to drink everything and stay down for a nap longer. Another great thing is that you just pop these onto the bottle without worrying about all the extra parts and gadgets, less to clean and better for baby in so many ways! I’m so happy that I was able to receive and test this product for free from WeeSpring Parent Panel.
Date published: 2019-05-17

Rated 3 out of 5 by Jblake from Lots of options for babies with digestion issues I received these nipples for free from the Weespring Parent Panel. My 7 month old already uses Avent bottles but these nipple have extra features for colic/gas. My son took to the nipple well at first but then got angry so I turned the bottle to find a different flow rate. He really wasn't pleased with any of them. We don't typically use a anti-colic bottle so that may have been part of it. I can see how the variable flows would be helpful for a baby with more digestion problems. One of the biggest issues was that my son likes to hold his own bottle so each time he readjusted it was a different flow speed. I think this would be best for a younger baby with digestion issues. Overall we love the Avent products but this nipple wasn't the best match for us.
Date published: 2019-05-16

Rated 5 out of 5 by TheRaq from Gas-easing miracle My daughter is 3 months old and primarily breastfed. Every once in a while, we give her a bottle just to make sure she won’t refuse a bottle in the future. From birth, we used the same bottle brand that we used for my first child. It’s designed to mimic feeding from the breast, but also not cause any nipple confusion. My daughter was not a fan. She would fight it, cry, and I’d usually end up having to toss the bottle and breastfeed. As every breastfeeding mother knows, milk is gold; you don’t ever want to waste any milk. So it was extremely frustrating that my daughter was refusing to drink from the bottle. But with these Philips Avent bottles, my daughter latched right on. The 3m+ was a little too quick for her even on the slowest flow, but once she got the hang of it, she did well. It is extremely convenient to basically have three nipples in one. As parents of two little ones, we have a ton of supplies. So being able to have 3-in-1 nipples cuts down on the clutter! When she’s a little sleepier I can turn the nipple to the slower setting and she won’t be drowning in milk, and then turn it to a faster flow when she’s starving in the morning. My daughter preferred the 1m+ medium flow nipple best. It seemed to release the milk in a flow that mimics breastfeeding, which is what she is used to. I’m also a fan of these bottles because the nipple doesn’t collapse like our usual bottles. It eliminates some of the frustration of giving bottles to a fussy baby. My daughter is a SUPER gassy baby, and these bottles definitely helped ease her tummy troubles. The AirFree vent design is genius. Even when the bottle is parallel to the ground, the nipple still stays full of milk, so baby isn’t swallowing all the air that other bottles allow into the nipple. Anything that stops my daughter from being gassy and miserable is a huge plus in my book! For starters my son has been exclusively breastfed since birth and I have only introduced a bottle a handful of times. My view on it was, what is the need if I’m with him, and it is nice building a stash of breastmilk in my freezer for the future! I reintroduced bottles about 2 months ago now and it has been quite the challenge. Especially for a drink of water after baby food. He acted like I put hot sauce on the nipple before hand and would make a sour face, I promise I didn’t! I opened this Philips Avent Anti-colic baby bottle VARIABLE FLOW up, washed and sterilized it, filled it with some water while using the nipple with the two small holes and just handed it to him so he could make the next move himself, and sure enough he started drinking! I was shocked and excited to finally find something that works! It’s super convenient to have a variety of nipples to chose from depending on what he is drinking. For example with water we use a slower flow so he doesn’t drink too fast, and then with breastmilk we do the faster flow with a larger opening because he can handle drinking that faster because of the thickness. He loves both sizes for different things. The Philips Avent Anti-colic nipple is his favorite and honestly the only one he will accept currently! Now let’s talk gas. My baby gets quite gassy and it makes him super uncomfortable and fussy. So the anti-colic function definitely helps improve with his gas! You can see the air bubbles being kept back away from the nipple itself making sure my baby doesn’t swallow a bunch of air! It makes it easier to get his burp out and have a happy fed baby! Not worrying about how many burps he will have or if he will spit up afterwards is a relief! It just so happened that I stumbled upon such an opportunity as of late. As a member of the weeSpring Parent Panel, I was given the new Philips Avent Anti-colic baby bottle variable flow nipples, in return for my honest feedback. I was particularly excited to give these as go as i've never heard of such a development in bottle nipples. The flow of the milk/formula can be changed simply by turning the bottle. Absolute genius! And since my 8 month old is on medium flow nipples still, I thought this would be the perfect chance to see if she was ready to make the transition to a faster flow. When we received the nipples, I read the packaging to make sure i knew exactly how to use them. There isn't much instruction, but then again it is pretty straight forward, attach the nipple and turn the bottle if you desire a different flow. There are 3 flow rates shown on the side of the nipple, indicated by 1, 2 or 3 lines. The packaging also states that these nipples are for 3 months plus. And if you're like me and didn't see the small print, they are touted as variable flow Anti-colic nipples for THICKER feeds. Thicker being the key word here. Our first go with the bottle went ok. I mixed up some formula, but it's not a thick mixture. It is a specialty brand for milk protein allergy, but i'd say its the standard viscosity of regular formulas. Then I gave the bottle to my daughter to enjoy her feed. She's at an age now where she likes to hold the bottle and feed herself, however this might not be the best method for aligning up the correct flow indicator. But try telling her that. So with baby manning the bottle and a little help from mom, we maneuvered the bottle nipple to the second flow rate. It was too fast. Going back a step, we started with the first flow rate and that too was too fast. Formula was seeping out of her mouth and all down her face and neck. This actually hasn't happened to us before and I was taken aback as these nipples are labeled as being for ages 3 months and older. Keep in mind, I have an 8 month old and boy does she know how to eat. So the feeding didn't quite go as planned, there was a bit of coughing but she did drink most of the bottle. Further investigation on my part, led me to mix up a bottle of formula and tip it sideways over the sink. I tested each flow rate and to be quite honest, they all looked the same to me. But I do believe that if you do need to feed a thicker formula that these nipples would be a game changer. Over the course of the next few days, I kept offering her the bottle with the Philips Avent Anti-colic variable flow nipple, but she refused to drink from it each and every time. I can't really say that these eased any colic symptoms as I haven't been able to really test that function. But I do appreciate the design and idea of these nipples, they just didn't work for us at this time.
Date published: 2019-05-16

Rated 4 out of 5 by Mom21dogand1baby from Great concept! The concept behind this nipple is really neat and I love the idea of having multiple flow levels in one nipple. I started off trying to change the flow rate during feedings (e.g. start slow, change rate to medium, end slow) but this did not go over well. Turns out I liked the concept of changing rates during feedings more than my little one so we ended up using just one flow rate per feeding. This is ok though because the design of the nipple still allowed us to experiment with what flow rate worked best for her by choosing a rate and sticking with it for one full feed then changing to another rate. This was all done without having to go find a different flow nipple, we just used a different position for the next feed! The convenience of the Philips Avent Anti-colic baby bottle VARIABLE FLOW, 4pk for us is in the fact that you do not have to store multiple nipples in order to do this type of experimenting and ultimately feeding at the correct rate. You get a variety of rates all in one neat package! We did not notice a change in gas with our little one but did like that the nipples were less prone to collapse. Though the Philips Avent Anti-colic nipple were perhaps not her favorite upon first encounter, she took to them fairly easily and we plan to continue using them. This really changed everything for us. Our little girl cried for hours after feeding, either hungry from spitting up or with gas pains. It was heart breaking to see such a drastic change in our daughter. We when through many different bottles only to find most mediocre and only mildly decreasing discomfort. The Phillips Advent Anti-colic baby bottle is wonderful and has really changed things. My picky little girl took to the new nipple style really fast. There has been substantially less spit-up and she spends much more time being that same happy girl I brought home. The only complaint I have was trying to get it part to clean, just a little difficult to break the seal. But overall I can say I would and will be purchasing more of these. This is our new favorite bottle! My little one suffers from reflux and has to have thickened milk to reduce spit up and gas. And this is the perfect bottle! The variable flow nipples are perfect for his thickened feeds. He easily adjusted to the bottle and in just a few feeds I saw a difference in his reflux after feeding. With the previous bottles he would still spit up regularly after feeds with the Avent anti colic bottle his spit was reduced significantly. I immediately went out and bought more! There are so many bottles on the market and I did not want a bottle that came with too many pieces and was difficult to clean but the most important things was that my little girl would accept the bottle while I was at work. I washed the bottles before using them and they were a breeze to clean; came apart easily and did not have ‘hard to clean’ spots. Before I went back to work, I decided to test drive the bottle just in case she rejected the bottle and needed me to nurse her. She took the bottle very well and I had peace of mind she had a bottle that she would be able to use while I was away from her. Another plus was there was no spit up afterwards and she was a happy baby! Others in my family have also used this bottle and have commented how easy it is to feed her and cleaning the bottle was fast and straightforward. Thank you to weeSpring Parent Panel for sending me these nipples to try and review.
Date published: 2019-05-15

Rated 4 out of 5 by Kindrasimpson from Nice design, small learning curve. The short story: I like these bottles and I am a fan of the variable flow nipples. I gave them four stars because it can be difficult to position the nipple correctly on the bottle to get the desired flow rate when using the anti-colic valve insert. If I was buying all new bottles I would definitely choose this bottle, but I think the variable flow nipple concept works better on the Naturals line. I am an exclusive pumper, so I’ve been bottle feeding since my daughter was born. She has been using the Avent Naturals line with the variable flow nipples. She has been fairly picky about her bottles and the flow rate of the nipples. These are the narrow mouth bottles, the general shape is different, and we did experience a slight learning curve to get used to the new nipple, but she took to it fairly well after we found her desired flow rate. Other good things about this is that while there is an additional piece to maintain compared to the Naturals line, it was harder for her to gulp air because the anti colic valve keeps milk in the nipple even if she tips the bottle away from her face. I enjoy simplicity in bottles, so having the addition of the anti-colic valve is an extra step, however I didn’t find it to be that big of a deal. All of the pieces are dishwasher safe and nothing is so tiny it will get lost and it’s easy to assemble, even in the middle of the night. The biggest drawback is, as I mentioned above, the variable flow nipple can be hard to position correctly while using the anti-colic valve. You can’t just turn the bottle to adjust the flow because the valve won’t work as intended. Once I discovered that my baby likes the number 2 flow rate I could adjust and it wasn’t a big deal. As far as reducing gas/reflux, I think it was actually worse until I learned the correct flow rate and my baby learned how to latch. After the first couple uses it got much better, and she doesn’t spit up nearly as much. That said, if you’re switching bottle styles I would give it a few tries before making a final decision. My baby is primarily breastfed and can be really picky about a bottle, but she seemed to love this one. She usually gets frustrated with bottles and takes forever to finish just a few ounces but with the different selections of nipples and the insert that allowed her to hold the bottle and still get milk when not held upright, she was able to finish a bottle without the frustration, which is huge for us.
