It is for ages 5+ and it comes with batteries already installed. It is a cute toy but it doesn't move or sound anywhere near like a real hamster. It rolls until it hits a object then it stays stuck for a moment until it decides to spin around. However it usually spins right into the same direction as before so it gets very frustrating for my little girl. All you do to activate it is to turn the switch on under its mouth and start petting it on its back. It sounds like it's talking to you in a high pitch voice. As you pet its back it gets more excited which makes it want to run around. If you leave it alone for 1-2 minutes it will fall asleep. When you want to wake it up you pet its back again. He even made a little bed for him. It basically just rolls around and squeaks. Our cat really likes it too. I'm just happy it came with batteries and isn't very loud. For the price point, it is nice. She loves the way I dances around the floor. It's got little cute noises it makes as it goes. And when you put it on top on the sensors it makes the noises as well. I like that it's movements are sporadic on the floor so it looks like it's really running around. And the way the feet go around and it taps on the floor to actually sounds like a little rodent running around. Doesn't have too many Bells and whistles which is nice. Since it is a child's toy it should be simple enough for them to understand. I think it would definitely be fun if you had two of these running around in a box it would look like they would be chasing each other. Great for an extra small gift and a birthday or Christmas. You do have to be careful of where the little toy goes. If it gets in a corner with a lot of dirt and hair it does get wrapped around it's Wheels. This cute little hamster hurries and scurried around and makes a really cute sound. Just pet it back on there it goes all over in circles , the more you pet her the happier she gets and gets very excited too. It does take batteries but they are included.
