Firstly I am only able to review this set based on the build of the F1 W12. I have been unable to progress very far with the Project One as all four of the Cross Axle/connector pins are missing from bag 3. As this is step 4 of the build it has prevented me from progressing much further. It's not an piece you normally get spares of, and whilst not visible when the car is complete I don't have enough in any colour to make do. Secondly, I dislike writing bad reviews, particularly for a product I have previously gifted to others. I very much want to believe that my bad experience isn't going to happen to anyone else. However whilst the missing pieces have likely resulted in my overall score being low, and my subsequent decision to not recommend to others, I would have still not rated this beyond average. I do not normally buy the Speed Champions range for myself, but have purchased several sets for family members. I am therefore unable to say if this is a typical build experience for Speed Champions or not. I purchased this set for myself as I am a big follower of Formula 1 and it seemed like a nice collectable. Starting with the good stuff. The car has fab playability. Moves well and looks good when complete. I was really impressed with the halo. Much more sturdy than I anticipated and clever design. However the missing pieces do cast this in a bad light, but are not the main reason for my frustration and disappointment. The biggest issue I have with this set is the large number of stickers. There are a minimum of 29 on the F1 and 28 on the Project One. And many of them are small and fiddly to place. The good news is that most of the stickers don't stand out too much as stickers, unlike ones on Discovery or Apollo 11. I also thought it was sensible to have stickers for driver number and identifier so builders can chose between Bottas (no.77 and yellow) or Hamilton (no.44 and black). But I did not enjoy all the others. It is disruptive to the build to be constantly going between the Lego and the stickers, and some like the rear chassis look very noticeable. I also think the instructions could be tweaked to ensure that all the stickers are placed before the tile is added to the car. It was really hard to do it on another step of the build. Furthermore, some of the tiles have had images printed on them. Personally I would have preferred to pay more and avoid the craft section of the build. There are also a lot of small pieces in this set (not a surprise). However in the early build I found these often pinged off, especially the steering wheel. There is no spare of the wheel so I would consider adding this nearer the end (around the same type the Halo is added) to avoid losing it. I am sure I would have scored it higher if I had been able to complete the set. As other reviews have said, it's inexplicable and almost unbelievable that they wouldn't include an extra minifig head - they give us sticker options for both drivers, but no head that works for Lewis Hamilton, and no hair that works for Valtteri Bottas. Now I have a Finn minifig without a head because there aren't many other figures that fit the bill. The F1 team in 2020 and 2021 were all about representation, which is why the cars were black instead of the traditional silver, but they couldn't give us an extra piece of plastic or two? Also, the stickers - I get that it would be too expensive to print everything on the parts, but the alignment of the stickers (either the printing or the die cutting) is not centered, so it is very difficult to line up the design part with the pieces correctly. The numbers on the engine cover in particular left one of them partly hidden by another piece when the two sides were applied the same way, and the nose piece was also very off center. From a set design perspective - the F1 car in particular is really not a good set to play with, the wings are far too fragile, so it may not be the best set for children. They are made for his age group but it still requires him to really pay attention and follow directions. I really appreciate that Lego can provide that for him and yet still be fun. I see these toys as educational. In the end, the cars looked spot. My son loves them and I think they look awesome. As typical, the packaging is great and very easy to work through with the instruction books. This set does have a lot of small or specific pieces in it, so the age rating feels about appropriate, though my 6 yr old helped to build the cars. The attention to details of the real vehicles is apparent and though that can make some parts, like the spoiler, easier to break apart, the appearance quality is well done. The cars roll very well, but the wheels are fixed, so there is no possibility to turn them if it's desired. I gave this to my 8 year old to build. It kept him busy for a couple hours. He loved how detailed it was and the colors of the vehicles. He is a speed champions fan especially because the vehicles are always detailed and look realistic. He said it could of been more challenging but he loves master builder sets so a lot of sets he buys arent challenging. But he loves cars!
