He spent a better part of an afternoon patiently building it. When he finally finished, the nether portal wouldn&rsquo;t work properly. There were a lot of tears of frustration! I tried to fix it but realized I needed to build it myself to figure out what was happening with the mechanism. So then I also spent a good hour or so rebuilding it from scratch. He just turned 8 so I thought maybe he made a small error in building that impacted the final design. Well I finally finished it and It worked for all of 30 seconds. The crank broke off inside and I had to take it apart. Part of the crank seems to push part of the wall structure which pushes it apart. I adjusted it which helped at first but ultimately it broke again. I consider myself to be apretty good LEGO builder and so unless I am completely missing something, I think the mechanism is a bit finicky and breaks easily. All the figures are great though, but unfortunately the set has sat in a pile completely unused because no one has wanted to spend the time trying to rebuild it again since. A lot of them I have trouble putting together side by side, especially these more hilly ones. This set however is just perfect. I love that it blends well with other sets, has a nice selection of figures and tools, and has a play feature thats not only hidden away well, but just functions really well. Whoever designed this should be proud of themselves. He said that the instructions are somewhat easy to follow, but that it was hard to get the blocks to connect completely. Snapping on a piece on one side would result with a piece on the other side snapping off. It&rsquo;s very hard to make the characters hold the weapons and hard to remove them once they are there. Once he did get the portal together, it didn&rsquo;t work the way it was intended. The little figures are amazing, My youngest son loves the wither and my eldest thought Steve and his sward were the best. The set looks absolutely amazing put together. Hours of fun for my children. We have put it up on a shelf so they can come back to it when they please. It took them about 1 hour to build which was about the right amount of time before the boys lost interest. The set comes with a few figures to play with and is a decent size.
