I purchased this beautiful typewriter as a display piece for my office. Very technical and fun build.
As a professor of Information Systems/Technology I love how this typewriter captures the important influence that analog technologies had on society before the advent of digital input devices such as the keyboard. My students love it and it's also a great conversation starter on the history of the QWERTY typing system which is still prevalent, despite being obsolete and inefficient in the digital age.

The typewriter is a berry nice set for display and for play but the build does have one minor flaw, when you push the keys the bar moves to the right and when it won’t move anymore you slide it to the left. This mechanism does work however the springs are too weak and do not provide enough force to move the bar all by itself and needs help to move all the way down.

Awesome!
I bought this for the nostalgia factor. I spent years in newsrooms, and there's just something about a typewriter that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.
This build was just plain cool. There were a lot of fiddly bits and the occasional feeling that I wouldn't be able to finish it. That all came to a head when one of the pieces popped off and fell into the depths of the typewriter just as I was starting the last bag. Trying to retrieve it gracefully made it fall in deeper and get stuck in the mechanical works. Argh! I finally had to take the whole thing apart, retrieve the piece (which I gave a stern talking to), and then figure out how to put it back together again. Of course, just as I was putting on the last element, I noticed 2 little round spacers lying on the table. Ah, well. Pretty sure they weren't important. 😬
This was an extremely difficult build, but it was very satisfying in the end. I've had friends tell me that can't believe it's LEGO. That says a lot.

Absolutely love this build and is one of my favourite that I have done. I’ve only recently in the past year been interested in Lego and I was intimidated by the size to start with but once I opened it and started building it was suprisingly easy and really thought out extensive instructions. A super fun build there was only 1 piece that was missing which has not happened in any previous builds so was not a big deal and I contacted support and the part was sent the same day. Overall very happy with this piece.

Looks great; mine doesn't work
I have nothing but respect for this set. As a display; as a piece of Lego engineering; as a designer's vision executed flawlessly; as a trifecta of whimsy, nostalgia, and functional play features; this set is a slam-dunk.
The only problem is, mine doesn't actually work the way it's supposed to.
This is almost certainly a "me" problem. Perhaps my ambition exceeded my skill with this set. Make no mistake, this is a complex build. Which isn't surprising given the functionality built in, but does mean that it's pretty easy to mess something up.
Which, clearly, I did. The paper carriage doesn't move with the key strikes, the keys are stiff and stuck in place, and the only way I could possibly figure out what went wrong would be to disassemble the entire thing and start over.
Does that matter? Well...maybe? I mean it still makes a fantastic display piece, but it does mean that I'm always a little bit frustrated when I look at it because it isn't quite as good as it's MEANT to be.
I still recommend it, but be very, very, VERY careful with the build.

I have been intrigued with this build since I first saw it 2 years ago. As a 57 year old I grew up a typewriter similar to this and I thought it such a cool idea to have every day retro items as builds. I finally decided to order it and it was a challenge to put together, mostly because I didn't grasp how complicated the process would be but I was so amazed and proud of myself that everything worked the first time.
My big regret is that I didn't have the stickers. If they were in the envelope with the instructions, then I threw them out.
Please let me know how to get them to really complete this awesome build

I've been a Lego enthusiast since I was a child. However this is my first set that I've ever built. Aside from the learning curve which was not as steep as I thought it would be I was able to put this together in a reasonable amount of time. It was very zen. And as long as you double check all of the parts are the right parts you won't have to rebuild your key set seven times like I did. But it was all learning experience, I'm glad for it. And I love this piece. As a writer I have it on my desk and just absolutely adore it. I get compliments on it every time somebody stops by the house, if you are interested in stories writing or anything like that you will love this piece. The return moves, the keys function, it all makes noise, it is a wonderful piece and I highly recommend it!

Rats.
the idea of this build is beautiful. absolutely beautiful, I have memories of this avocado green typewriter in my folks house, also in 7th grade I had a real typing class, not a word processor or a computer of any sort. The idea is Super neat. However, it doesn’t work as a typewriter to play with. not at all. the other critical reviews have a point. And just to say, one of the coolest thing about this build was the steno size notebook that came with the build. It’s filled with a sweet lego letter, in many languages (amazingly neat) to all fans that fits into the typewriter. but….the typewriter is missing the numbers and that pretend letter that I get to play with HAS NUMBERS in it. like dates, rats. typewriters from this era did have one row of numbers at least. But even without my head trip about the numbers, this build doesn’t work. It’s just highly unstable. I know this is terrible review, but everyone, trust me: the keys do not return once pressed. The pictures for the directions of each step are missing that key element that outlines what is being added for each step. That really wouldn’t be too much of an issue, it is a serious build afterall, right? But the fact that it doesn't work or even assemble correctly is highly frustrating. especially when I trying go back through the directions to understand more about what I might gave done wrong. Instead the build gets pulled apart only to follow the same odd build instructions again. Also, it can’t really be held while added the prices for each step without it snapping apart. It just needs better thought for this build, lego and retail experience. This was a gift build from my mom, I was super excited to share with her the end results. I’ll say it again, rats. This is probably one of my favourite builds. It’s looks so cool when finished. Absolutely love it in my display case. Was a little tricky to assemble some parts, but the end result was worth it. Love it so much when people see it and they are shocked to learn it’s actually lego!

One of my best so far. Not at all hard to build. Very easy to follow instructions. When built it looks almost real. I would highly recommend this set.

Great first build experience
I liked Lego years ago and did a flower set last spring, but hadn't done any builds like this. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I did have to re-do the first part a couple of times as I did not know how to see if the shape was a half-height or full-height spacer, but once I figured that out it went together fairly easily. Again, as someone not used to the instructions, I missed a few parts that didn't show arrows for placement, so had to go back and add them. I definitely needed to take the required pieces and put them in one area and not turn the page until they were used. Some parts, like the gears, were hard to identify, but they were all used around the same area so they worked once I moved them around. Still, the back space doesn't work, so I must have forgotten something somewhere. But I love that I can add paper, the roller works, typing moves the carriage, and the carriage return works, even if I have to hold the typewriter so it doesn't move. Very fun. I really like it.

Love it!
Absolutely love this set. So much fun. If you buy this set, make sure to pay attention to the details in the directions. Don’t second guess yourself, take your time, and have fun. The pieces WILL fit and/or tie together eventually in a further step. Double check your work, know they will fit eventually, and don’t stress it because it’s supposed to be fun. Some pieces will be a challenge. Anyways, I adore this build. I recommend to any experienced builder or to one looking for a Lego challenge. Definitely worth the money. So many little surprises with this one as I never knew which piece of the typewriter would end up “working”. Not every single aspect of the typewriter “works”. Let’s be honest people, it would have to get very intricate and complex to make every part of a typewriter in Lego form actually “work”. To make it enjoyable for almost everyone across the board.. I’m sure the Lego team can only include so many aspects along with making detailed and precise directions to follow. It’s supposed to be fun guys. Again, highly recommend and very happy with my purchase.

One of the Best Ideas Sets
As a writer and a person who is fond of typewrites, when I saw this model I knew I had to get it. It is beautifully crafted as a retro machine, the choice of color is on spot. I enjoyed the technical building and it's important to notify that there is plenty of that. The fact that one can use it, play with it, is. remarkable. The keys on the bottom line and those on the sides do not work too well.

Hi there. While this model doesn't have ink, you can still enjoy 'typing' on the keys, move the carriage and feed a real sheet of paper into the brick-built platen roller, just like a real one. - Henny, LEGO® Customer Service
