Constructing the lava field below, the rock formations encrusting the tower, up to the great eye, it was a joy to see this dark monument take shape. I particularly like the fact that it can be taken apart into three stable sections for moving or for play. It is very imposing standing next to my son's Gringot's Bank. It is also a nice contrast to his Rivendell. The build can be a bit repetitive in some areas, but overall, the experience was quite enjoyable. The final result is an imposing display, standing nearly three feet tall, that watches over whatever room you place it in. The interior of the tower, while initially offputting, works quite well for creating smaller scenes to display the minifigures included in the set, the selection of which is fairly solid. While Frodo and Sam's outfits are a bit inaccurate for when they are in Mordor, and Gothmog could have used a custom hairpiece, the rest of the figures are some of the best in the series. I consider myself as an expert builder but I had to rebuild the tower no less than 4 times. The studs to connect the outer layer are simply not strong enough to hold. There should have been more studs on the outside of the curved panels. Here are some tips. Make sure you know what color is to be used. Many colors are similar. Sorting is a must. If you don't sort double your build time. While it is possible to have a person build each section, I would recommend having the same person build the entire set, and here's why. There are so many storytelling moments that culminate until the last page. Having multiple people build short changes that experience. When it's done, it's majestic. As Gimli said, 'Certainty of sore fingers, *small* chance of success... What are we waiting for?' Well, not exactly but no truer words were spoken.
