It is unfortunate and absurd that an app is required to build this kit. The accompanying story played on a smartphone or tablet made it more engaging and fun. By giving them the liberty to create their own inventions (with ideas) it allowed them to play together in building a single set, something that is typically a struggle for two young kids with a transitional instruction-based set. We opened it today, and they played together for hours making many inventions for their rescue truck to save the different animal figures included. We will be on the lookout for more mission sets. This review is for the rescue set for my non-binary child. This kiddo loves playing with LEGOs with their sibling, but often finds the building part less fun, while my other child loves to build and follow the instructions. So first of all, the instructions were a lot more clear for my child on the app, and they even learned more techniques for using the orange tool that takes LEGOs apart. They were also totally enthralled by the story line. Later, they had a great time incorporating the new pieces into their LEGO play. Like many, my kids LOVE LEGO animals, so this set was great for that. It build strength in our kids hands and teaches them how to follow instructions and look at things carefully. After the animal rescue Lego was built they played with it for hours pretending to rescue animals. And the free play parts could easily have been just another page in the directions or a cardboard backdrop. The set has nice pieces, but the price is higher than normal to subsidize the development of the totally unnecessary app. The app experience itself is poor: slow loading (slow enough that a child would have patience issues). Any &quot;creative play&quot; parts aren't really anything at all. An example is &quot;open bag 3, build a traffic light according to normal directions, and then do whatever you want using the rest of the bag to find a way to get the owl off the top of the traffic light&quot;. The app gives 3 small example images (which paper easily could do, too). Nothing about the app adds to any creative play: it's only there to be a cartoon with some pauses for play backgrounds. There was zero reason for this to be app-based either. The same prompts would have been trivial to include in paper. I get the feeling that Lego is testing the waters for &quot;let's abandon including instructions&quot; in the box&quot; with these Missions sets, and disguising it as a creative play experience. This set would have been better as with traditional directions, with the added comic/free-play parts included on paper.
