Not only does it work, my granddaughter loves carrying it around with her while she&rsquo;s awake! The otter is larger than it appears online but is a nice size for cuddling and I appreciate that the facial features are embroidered on instead of plastic that can get scraped up or pulled off with wear. The sound features are soothing and not too loud. At 20 months, my granddaughter laughs at the otter&rsquo;s tummy going up and down but I imagine it would be rhythmic and soothing to a newborn or younger baby. The light function has a nice glow that is visible during normal daylight and just right at night. Overall, I&rsquo;m very impressed with this otter and think it would be a cute, yet useful, baby shower gift! I wish my granddaughter had it from birth so that they could grow up together! If your baby is older, don&rsquo;t let them see how you unvelcro the otter&rsquo;s back to access the settings or change batteries. The rhythmic breathing, and music is soothing. I do feel like the music is the same music these types of things have had since even I was a kid (annoying). Piano type / repetitive chorus songs. Music could definitely be updated! I do like that it&rsquo;s one push of the belly to turn on, and one to turn off. Very simple for quick turn on or for little ones needing to do it themselves. The otter is very soft and can be washed, which is a plus for something that comes into contact with kids. The plastic device used to create the up and down motion feels a little bulky. I know thing&rsquo;s like this have to be a certain size in order to work but it is a little bulky to be super cuddly. Overall though I feel like the idea behind it is super sweet and special, and could give most children comfort while mommy is able to have some space too. My three year old carries it around as a baby and sleeps with it each night. My 18 month old loves the sounds and lights. It goes with them everywhere. I never expected them to like it so much! It was originally intended for my son that is still on the way. I'm not sure if these two will give it up to pass on to him. From the parent's side of things, this Soothe 'n Snuggle Otter has been good for my children. While I cannot say that it has helped them fall asleep initially, they have used it for comfort when they wake up at night. I can hear the music turn on from their room and they seems to fall back asleep well. It has a variety of music and sound features. The only sound that my husband and I were not a fan of was the breathing sound. It sounds spooky to us. Our kids disagree though and will change it to this breathing sound at times. It also has optional light up belly and breathing motions. All of these settings can be adjusted from a battery pack with buttons located in the otter's back. If a child is young enough this will prevent them from changing the settings. It will not stop a toddler from changing it to whatever they want. Each time you press the belly to activate it, it will run for 30 minutes. You can end it by pressing the belly again. I greatly appreciate this simplicity in design, although I do wish the timer could be adjusted. I love that it can go wherever we go, and that its gender neutral, so it can be used when we have baby #2 (if she ends up sharing it, I feel like I'm going to buy another one). It calms her down fast, and also relaxes her (the breathing feature is amazing), my baby is quite the snuggle bug and will cry if I leave her just to go to the bathroom, this has helped me out immensely on just getting to go to the bathroom by myself without hearing a screaming baby. I also love the nightlight feature, as well as all the sounds, it's the perfect little sound machine, and we love it so much that we are on round 2 of batteries, my husband actually told me we are buying an extra of him, &quot;a back up&quot; incase he stops working from overuse because my daughter loves him so much.
