It can make a water mess if left unattended, but I give the kids a towel when playing and they wipe the mess up with it as they accidentally spill water. You could set it inside a tin catcher or serving dish if you are worried about keeping the water contained. This is the first color changing car my son has and it will not be the last after the amount of FUN he has had with this one!! He is 4 and able to use the toy all by himself. He really enjoys the make belief play zooming the car through the car wash!! My 7 year old daughter also thought it was cool and came running over to join in on the fun when he gets it out! This set comes with the Car Wash and one Cars Lightning McQueen color changing car. Up to this point, my daughter had been happy playing with the color change cars in the sink, small bowls of water or putting them in the freezer - the Disney and Pixar Cars Color Change Whale Car Wash Playset definitely ups the play value. Overall the car wash is straight forward to use and not too messy, even being a water toy (and honestly, my kiddos are just as happy playing with it without water as they are with water if you don't want the clean up). The color changing Lightning McQueen is super cool. Watch him change from red when it's cold to yellow as it warms up. The car is easy to move through the car wash and rolls out the end and down the ramp all on it's own. I thought they&rsquo;d lose interest but my 3 year old especially played with it for hours. When you put cold or warm water into the toy &amp; start out with submerging the car in the opposite temp, the car changes color as you push the water button for the car wash like you are washing the dirt off the car. You could also pretend it&rsquo;s a paint shop &amp; you are painting the car a different color. The color change is really nice &amp; contrasting too. The car is plastic &amp; seems too change color a bit more definitively &amp; instant than the metal die cast cars do that we have had on the past. There is minimal assembly &amp; the assembly is super easy. The parts to put together are under the bottom of the packaging. After pulling off the perforated tab on the bottom, it exposes the parts &amp; the screw tabs that hold the toy in the packaging. Just twist slightly &amp; it will undo. The reservoir where it holds water in the top of the toy to rain down on the car as it washes is not very big &amp; does not hold much water. A few squirts of water to wash the car &amp; it id empty, so it needs frequent refills. My 7 year old had fun playing with it as part of his city he built. If you just fill up the reservoir for the actual wash &amp; not the two trays at the bottom, the water mess id minimal. It could actually be played with inside if set on a beach towel, or even on the side of the bath tub &amp; played with at bath time. The idea is that you put the car into a ramp and then move it through the car wash where you can add water and make the color change on the car. The wash station has a button that when pushed allows water to be distributed over the car. There are trays underneath that catch the water which prevent everything from getting wet. You have to use cold water to allow the case to change so we added ice into our water. The car will change back to the yellow colors after is fully drys. That alone had my son so excited but then you add warm water at the top of the submarine and as lightening passes through you push the button and he changes back to yellow.
