I seen this and thought of him instantly! He was so excited to try this. The appropriate age is 8 yr old and my nephew is a bit younger, but as an adult i was frustrated with it. Instructions are a little unclear once you get past the first 5 and a bit unclear to read. He gave up and walked away i tried to continue working on it and no matter what i did i tried so hard not to strip the screws it&rsquo;s so hard not to. After a few hours i got it done i switched the screws and it went easier. My nephew loves playing with it now that it&rsquo;s done. My son is constantly getting into trouble for disassembling and then attempting to reassemble all of the appliances and computers in our home. Sometimes he's successful and sometimes he's not, but his passion for discovering how things work has continued to be insatiable through the years-- so much so that we have to keep all our tool cabinets locked. Since he was born, he has never been into &quot;kid&quot; television show or childrens' toys. He's always gravitated towards mechanical and automotive DIY television shows made for adults, so before putting together the model, he already had a good sense of the engine and how it worked. By putting the Discovery model engine together, he was able to test his knowledge in a safe and fun way, and without potentially destroying an actual engine! He loved that the model was hands on and that he was able to complete everything on his own with the help of easy to read instructions. He also really enjoyed showing us how everything worked when he was done. Even though he loved the model itself, I think his very favorite part was that he could finally work freely on something that he truly enjoyed without getting into trouble! This is the first time EVER that he has played with a toy that actually meant for children, so I am definitely a fan and will 100% continue to search for model Discovery kits in the future. He bailed within 10 minutes of beginning the project. I think it was just too complicated for him. To sum it up here are our pros and cons: Pros: 1. It&rsquo;s a cool idea and you get to learn about 2. Our friend (who knows about cars) let us know that the lights provided show where the combustion is happening in the engine. 3. Once it was finished, the kids were excited to see it work. Cons: 1. The screwdriver that is provided is too small to have the proper leverage for an adult but especially a child. We ended up using our own tools from home and they worked much better. 2. The directions were a little unclear in certain parts; for example, the section where it told us to place the pistons. 3. Your kid will not be able to build this, YOU will hardly be able to build this. The instructions start off really simple and easy to understand. Each part is labled by a letter and a number. It really helps you understand whether or not you have the right part. So my son and I began to build the engine together. The trouble with this kit is the screws, and there are a TON of them. They are made from the softest metal and nothing you do will keep you from stripping these screws. As you strip them, it will take more and more effort to screw them in. The other big issue is when you assemble the rocker arms and place them on the head. They need to go over the top of the valve stems, but in the picture it shows them beneath them, and that causes the engine to not work correctly. Three hours of frustration and a blister later, I finally had it all put together. It was a lot of pain and frustration for little reward. I dont recommend this unless they change the screws.
