It plays messages and musical notes and it lights up. The best part is that it writes &quot;secret&quot; messages that can only be viewed with the LED light that is built into the pen. My kids like leaving random blank notes around the house now and I have to read the hidden messages with the reveal light. They can write secret messages that are black light sensitive and for that purpose, it works as intended. The light built into the handle is a good idea, less pieces to separate and lose. The sound buttons aren't the greatest. You can't understand what they are saying and the internal speaker is grainy and low quality. Looks just like the one in the TV show. They say all the secret formulas are are safe with pen and notebook . The pen also plays different sounds and the Hypothesis song from the show . Parents who don't like toys that make noise beware as this pen does quite a bit of talking when the buttons are pressed.
