They are muted and pastel shades instead of your basic classic colors. All very pretty but gives you a different vibe or ability to have a more customizable design. They have a chisel tip so you can easily highlight or underline as well as write. The yellow and green are hard to see and would probably work best as just highlight colors. The most pigmented one is purple. The go on smoothly.
