He loves being able to change the cars appearance/customization and the instructions are easy to follow, even for him. They do not break apart easily, which is a feature I appreciate! He has dropped them a bunch and run them off a &quot;cliff&quot; (a couch) and they stay together, which is pretty much unheard of in a lego style toy. They were both able to choose two cars each to build, so it was a great value. They started out by following the directions to build each car as shown, then had a lot of fun mixing and matching and racing the cars to see how they could make them faster (which turned into a great science lesson with aerodymanics tests!). The almost 8 year old was able to follow the directions with no problems, but the just turned 5 year old needed a little bit of grown-up help, since sometimes the small pieces could be difficult to place correctly with little fingers, or remove. The included tool is helpful for that, but needs a little practice to learn how to use it. I liked that the box could be turned into a ramp, too. The kit includes lots of extra little pieces to customize your cars, so there is a lot of repeat play value. I do wish that some reusable bags for storage were included, however, because it's very easy to lose the small parts.
