Based on the 5+ age rating and the product pictures/information, the hope was that you essentially received Hot Wheels car with easily interchangeable components. The dream was for a Hot Wheels that a few parts could be easily swapped in and out or between vehicles. In reality the product is a Mega Construx set with a Hot Wheels theme. The set contains 4 cars and a bag of the interchangeable engine components/tires, for a total of 485 pieces. When constructed the cars are not Hot Wheels size nor work in Hot Wheels sets like normal Hot Wheels do. As a Mega Construx set we feel this is very successful. The cars are cool, the drivers are fun play with, and the interchangeable nature is exactly what we hoped for. However, as a Hot Wheels set the product falls short. The cars are not Hot Wheels compatible and essentially become stand-alone vehicles that cannot be used in the various Hot Wheels/Matchbox sets while also being more fragile due to their constructed nature. At the end of the day the issue here is really the Hot Wheels branding. Despite being labeled 5+, this set is really beyond the grasp of our 5 year old. As a Kindergarten teacher my wife slots this set as truly being more appropriate for 7-8 year olds in regards to both interest in the construction/customization and the ability to follow the plans and not require extensive parental support. This is a great product for the Mega Construx age group but not so much for the high end Hot Wheels age group. We will likely set this aside and re-introduce it to our daughter when she gets a little older and it is better suited to her type of play and interests. The directions were easy for him to follow but not so easy that he didn't feel accomplished when he finished building them. They hold up pretty well in comparison to some other cars like this we had tried. They were actually able to play with these after they were built and didnt have to constantly put them back together. The only issue i did have was a few of the pieces were really hard to fit together. They did fit, they just were hard for him to push together. He loves all things hot wheels and was excited that he was going to get to build his own. I made him do one car at a time so he wouldn't loose the pieces, but now I am pretty sure he has intermixed them anyways lol.
