It fires a single dart after pulling back a loading tab. This causes the shield to pop out into a couple wings. This works most of the time with minimal effort but sometimes snags a bit and doesn't quite open. I like the single dart concept. It isn't just a mess of darts everywhere. Shoots great with pretty decent distance. It looks cool and fits the kids hands well. Overall a fun, simple toy.</span>
