I am a vertebrate palaeontologist with specialization on sauropods and I have to say that this is an impressive acquisition and a must-have for any dino-lover and collector! Mattel truly did a nearly impressive job to finally give us a descent and large sauropod toy. It dwarves every other dinosaur toy I have, except for the Legacy Collection Brachiosaurus which I also intend to buy. However, I have to mention the points where this could have been improved upon and make it really match the expectations of dinosaur-enthusiasts. The first point is the fact that the whole toy is hollow. I understand that Mattel wants to keep the cost low but to have a toy made of hollow plastic downgrades the whole item, as it enhances the feeling of 'fakeness', of not being as realistic as it should. Plus, it also gives the impression that you have wasted a considerable amount of money (for a toy) for almost nothing. Second, while the plastic tries to give a realistic skin impression, it fails because of its type. There could have been used better types of material/plastic that would give a more realistic, skin-like texture, similar to rubber-like material such as resin, etc. Third, just like the T.Rex of this line which makes sounds and semi-automated moves, the designers could have added such mechanisms inside the body of the toy, in order to make it more realistic. Overall, it seems that they tried to sell 'quantity-over-quality' with this toy, in an effort to impress the children but they failed to remember that kids also happen to know a ton of information about them and that the designers should keep in mind that you cannot fool them with less-than-accurate toys anymore. I understand the need to be low in cost but with that price upon it, I think they could produce something much more playable and accurate (to the movie, at least). Now, concerning scientific accuracy, this toy retains the relative proportions of the limbs of flagellicaudatan diplodocoids but the tail could have been a bit longer with more of the whip-like tail at the end. The head, though, is the greatest inaccuracy in the whole toy. Even though it is cute and well-sculpted (a plus for the toy) it is far from an actual Apatosaurus skull (shape of cranium, mandibles, teeth). Thus, it is a great dinosaur toy but in that price it could have been more realistic as other major dinosaur toy companies do (and have done in the past) in order to satisfy adults and specialists, too.
