Useless with batteries
Bought this less than 24 hours ago, and while the batteries for the sound are great, we have gone through THREE AAA batteries for the train motion (only takes 1). Batteries do NOT last more than 2-3 hours. Super cute train and sound, too bad the whole purpose of us buying it was for it to move on it's own and we therefore returned it 24 hours after we bought it.

Good idea with major flaws
My 3yr old son loves having an engine that will go around his wooden train set by itself and this is currently one of his favourite toys. The concept is great but execution is terrible.
1. The switch that turns the train on/off/reverse is horribly designed. Especially for a children’s toy. It is difficult for a small child to turn it off and too easy to put it in reverse. The worst though is that it will turn itself on when it falls over and gets turned on by accident all the time while playing, or when put into a toy bin, which drains the battery even quicker than it already does.
2. You will go through a ton of AAA batteries and it is quite finicky to replace. We have to change the battery every time after one or two play sessions. Part of that is because it’s so easy to bump it on by accident, but I think it just drains quickly too. The cell batteries that are used for the sound have also died after less than 2 months.
3. The power isn’t great. We have a bunch of extra cars and my son puts them all behind (about 8) and it barely can make it up the small hill we have.
4. The powered wheels don’t really turn unless the engine has batteries and is turned on. This means it can’t be played with by pushing it manually. I’m also worried my son will break it when he does push it to help it along.
5. The worst though is that it doesn’t stay on the tracks very well at all. The most gradual corner can derail it. I’ve tried to make tracks that it will handle and cannot get a grasp on what will work and what won’t. It’ll make its way through a tricky S curve and the come off on a gradual curve. The more cars you add the worse it is too. Playing with this engine requires quite a bit of babysitting. If you can get a track that works though, it’s like having a little powered train set, which is great.
With that said though, this is the only engine my son uses, and he doesn’t even realize that these sets are meant to be pushed. He does get frustrated when the train derails, but he’s getting better about getting it back on. When it works, it’s good, but it could and should be much better.

A similar experience to other reviewers. The battery powered engine went through a AAA battery each day. The screw that keeps the battery cover on threads into a flimsy plastic washer that came off when we changed the battery the second time meaning we had to glue it back in place in order for it to work. Returned.

Tire never stayed on
My son plays with his wooden track everyday and was so excited when he received this as a gift. Unfortunately, the rubber tire kept falling off. We would put the tire back on constantly, but it never stayed on. It’s almost like it was the wrong size. The train doesn’t move that great without the rubber tires. Eventually, the rubber tire tore from falling off so much. Very disappointing- this happened after a week of a playing. If it wasn’t so challenging to go places right now with young children, I would have returned it.
