The guard rail serves to add support to holding the pieces together, so to speak! Also, as mentioned earlier, the bed is tested to the US CPSC Toddler Bed standard as shown in the listing. We cannot verify the compliance if the side rails are not attached. They cannot be removed without compromising the strength of the assembly. They serve to support the headboard with relation to the bed itself. Additionally, it is tested to the US Toddler Bed standard with the side rails. We cannot confirm it&#39;s safety in any other configuration.
