It has a bunch of special pieces, but a good amount of regular ones as well, allowing you to build more than just basic brick things, yet not leaving you with only role specific parts. The parts are, in my opinion, excellently balanced for creating small builds. For a twenty dollar set, I was surprised with the part count, as well as flexibility. I particularly liked the longship and the submarine, and while I wasn't impressed by the whale or the turtle when I looked at the box, in person they both have a definite charm to them and I appreciated their inclusion. That said the plane (which I thought would be my favorite) was underwhelming, the coral is a nothing, and the bird/totem pole/sea monster... thingy... not a fan, whatever it is. All that said, the &quot;main builds&quot; of this set are sort of secondary to just making your own thing, barely using up half the available parts, but it sort of lets down there. The parts are all either really specialized or they only include one or two of the piece type, making it really hard to make anything coherent or aesthetically pleasing. I like some of the unique pieces provided, but could've used more basic/generic parts. I love the blend of bright and colorful pieces combined with the more versatile earth tones and neutrals. There is also a booklet with instructions to build a half dozen clever ocean themed projects. My preschooler needed only a little assistance following the instructions, and my elementary age children had no trouble with the clear illustrations and simple steps. The guide helped them gain confidence and after they completed their planned projects they were inspired to build on their own and see what else they could design.
