The lid keeps sand covered and out of the weather. It&rsquo;s also great to store toys in as well and the built in seat areas are great for little to sit in. My only complaint is that when I was assembling it I couldn&rsquo;t get the 4 bottom pieces flush with eachother so it&rsquo;s not perfectly aligned. I&rsquo;m sure the sand will weigh down the pieces that aren&rsquo;t flush. However, my 3 year old loves it and I would still recommend it.
