If this had been a naby and not a four year old they would have fallen down the stairs! Not easy to open or close, needs two hands. Works well and is sturdy even with our 15 month pulling on it. My previous gate had a swinging door design which I found inconvenient. I really enjoy having a gate that easily slides from side to side so I don't have to worry about it rubbing against my baseboards or swinging back at me after I've walked through. The locking mechanism is very user friendly as I can lock and unlock it with one hand, but sometimes retracts quickly (and loudly) into its base. Once it's retracted, you can barely notice it's at the top of the stairs due to it sleek look. In addition, it's designed so that it cannot be opened by the single push of a button. You must flip a tab and then press the button, which means my toddler can't open it herself. The mesh is also much stronger than I thought it would be. It's also very easy to wipe clean. The handle can be installed at the top of the gate or middle and after using for a few days, I moved it to the middle because it was much easier to pull across and lock in that position. Personally, I did not want to drill into my wooden banister at the top of my stairs so we got a little creative with the installation. Rather than drilling into our staircase, we drilled the locking panel onto a 2x4 and used zips ties to attached the 2x4 to the banister. The section the gate retracts into is installed into the opposite wall. It's extremely studry and has worked out well. It would be great if baby gates came with an alternate solution to drilling into a staircase banister.
