It requires batteries which aren't included. The hippo burps some kind of steam out. There's a liquid cartridge thing included that you put in the hippo. That's how he burps. The problem is the how to play instruction is not really clear that we have to flip down the number before it start to play. I suggest watch the video how to play it. You also need 3 AAA batteries that not included. Love the burping and steam light effect, but it doesn't smelly like we thought about. You feed the hippo small round cardboard &ldquo;food&rdquo; pieces and whatever number is on the food is the amount of cranks you turn the handle. If the hippo burps on your turn you loose. The kids think it&rsquo;s hilarious when if it burps! You put a small amount of water in its ear to make it look like steam coming out of its mouth. Game is a riot!! We have a 9 year old son and he laughed so hard playing this game. It obviously wasn't much of a challenge for him, but the hilariousness of the situation more than made up for that.
