He was able to put the trains together, because it's a simple magnet and not a hook system. My son is 2 years old and is currently obsessed with trains! This particular train actually holds other trains with its magnetic force. He enjoys pulling multiple trains at a time and this did not disappoint! It is also made of solid material. The wood is smooth and the paint color is bright blue. The wood is great quality and the wheels and nice and sturdy. The whole thing has already suffered some pretty substantial abuse from my kids, and it still looks good as new... no paint chipping or broken wheels. I love the little cart that comes with it.
