The VTech Lil' Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo is a pretty neat toy. It lights up and has different things to do on it. It has nature sounds, stories, and songs. You have to hit the button multiple times to sort through them, otherwise you just get one over and over again. It has a volume dial so you can turn it as loud or soft as you would like. The lights can be interchangeable or set to just one color. She loves it so far, because it's enough to hold her attention for a bit. Our daughter began enjoying this around 2 months of age and it has become an integral part of her falling asleep routine! 1) The stars that shine on the ceiling gently change colors, keeping her attention without being distracting or stimulating. 2) There are 4 basic sound options - story, song, nature, and combination. Then, depending on how many times you press each button, there are a number of sub-options. For example, the &quot;song&quot; button has options with and without a singing voice, lullaby-type songs, classical songs, etc. This is nice because, like any child's toy, it gets repetitive to adults and stuck in your head. I find that my husband and I prefer different options and love that we have the choice! 3) The volume ranges from quite soft to loud. 4) The timer has options for 15, 30, and 45 minutes. Fantastic way to not waste batteries. 5) Speaking of batteries, we leave the power button in the &quot;on&quot; position out of pure laziness and batteries still last probably 8 weeks. Woohoo! I hate toys that cost more in battery power than they do to purchase. Of course, if you use cheapo batteries you won't get this result, but regular old Duracell seems to be working well for us. We activate it for each nap and then at night time as well as any time she activates it herself. 6) The noise activation feature is really neat. It won't activate for quiet noise (cooing, regular baby talk, normal adult voice, etc) so you don't run the risk of waking baby up further if she's just kind of in that in-between stage. So I like that you can adjust the volume), it also has a button that let's you adjust the lights on the top of the hippo and has a mic that responds to babies cries and will try and help soothe them back to sleep which I think is pretty cool for a baby toy. The star lights are are beautiful touch and aren't high beaming levels to disrupt sleep. My son's favorite is the ocean sounds ( at least that's what gets him calm enough to fall asleep) . The hippo is soft except for the body where all the functions are and there aren't no sharp area to hurt baby. My son loves pulling on the tail and he's pretty rough on toys but the tail is well attached. The hippo is blue with darker blue plastic back that has the stars on it, so that light can project through. On the side is the setting buttons that you can use to adjust to your preference. You are able to adjust how loud or quiet you want it to play and how long you want the music to play which can be changed from 15 min to 30 mins to 45 mins. You can also choose how you want the lights to be displayed, it has 6 different settings with 4 different colors. As for the music, it can play &ldquo;100+ songs, melodies, sounds and phrases. There are so many options. One really funny thing is that I didn&rsquo;t read the instructions before using the hippo since my daughter was so excited to try it. During the day, my daughter was talking and it started playing music and doing the starlight. We just thought that was odd. Then it happened again and again, when my daughter was talking or we were talking to each other. Then we realized that its voice activated. It&rsquo;s meant to activate and turn on to sooth your child when they wakes up and cry in the middle of the night. How cool is that? I can see how that might bother other people, but I think it&rsquo;s a great idea. Lately, my 18 months old daughter has been getting up multiple time in the night. The hippo has helped to put her back to sleep. Also, I&rsquo;ve started to use it to establish a bed time route with her that she is getting used to. My daughter really likes the hippo. When the star lights came on, she said pretty, pretty in her little baby voice. The music really did sooth her and helps her fall asleep. This is definitely a nice gift to give to young mothers. Overall, my family and I love this soothing starlight hippo. It does exactly what it supposed to and keeps my daughter entertained and calm. I got the Lil' Critters Soothing Starlight Hippo and it is absolutely adorable. The face and feet are soft to the touch, but the belly is hard. I wish the entire little hippo was soft and cuddly, but it's not. So, don't expect it to be a toy to be played with, but more like a baby light projector, sound machine and music player that you'd put on the dresser in the nursery. It also lights up the ceiling and plays soothing lullabies. I really like the various features for setting the lights and music. This sweet little hippo would be such a thoughtful gift for your baby or a mom to be. Shipment packaging wasn't the greatest. It arrived in a bag with the box damaged. Luckily the toy was fine but could have been broken. It was easy to figure out and use. Multiple functions and colors on the lights. Several songs preloaded on it making it great for bedtime. I like that the music and star light feature can be used together or separate. There is also a timer feature with a few different options making it easy to set and walk away without having to return to shut it off. Its very cuddly and happy looking.
