They work great &amp; really don't leak. My girls could use them easily by about 18mos, maybe a bit earlier. Just for kicks, within a few days of getting the cups, both girls figured out how to press the edge of the cup &amp; dump them out. They never used spout cups, but like the straws &amp; this was a great way to ease them into regular cups. Liquid escapes only when the top is depressed. Then, its up to your child to swallow in time so it doesn't go all over him/her. It went through the dishwasher assembled and it wasn't until I realized that people weren't disassembling to wash it that I learned it is near impossible for my husband and I to assemble. I did get it to the point of being leakproof &mdash; until my 16 month old figured out that she can get it to spill milk all over the table if she lays it on its side and presses the top. I imagine that it will be great at about two, but twelve months is too young of a recommendation in my opinion. I know it says 12+ months on the package but we would just be using a regular cup otherwise. He doesn't need much water yet so the slow pour is great for intro. It was very easy for him to figure out how it functions. I wouldn't leave this, or any, cup within his reach because it's to drink with, not to play with so the mess and drowning hazard some have dealt with are non-issues under proper supervision, as recommended in the instruction booklet. It's one of the easier sippy cups to assemble in my experience and I love how all surfaces of each part are easy to clean. It's mostly common sense and the visual instructions are very basic. I do wish the handles were removable because he would be able to hold it better as such a young one. I've also had trouble finding this product in stores. I looked for it at five different places who claim to carry it before finding it. My son had as easy time with it and it didn't leak much. But cleaning is a pain in the bum!!! I've disassembled this cup and washed by hand and in the dishwasher and it does not get clean between the mouth piece and the rubber stopper. You can smell the gunk in there and you can see some of it, but to get in there and give it a good clean is not an option. I don't allow my son to use this cup anymore as I feel it may make him sick. Best money I ever speant and totally worth it! I tried numerous sippy cups with no success. a relative had told me about this cup and came across it on one of my shopping trips so I purchased it and thought I would give it a shot. it took him a few days but now he is drinking on his own. My son was born with bi-lateral cleft lip and palate and he has never been able to suck from a bottle,sippy cup, straw, ext. He has had a feeding tube his whole life (he's almost 4) and just started eating and drinking orally within the last year and we have always had to take the plugs out of sippy cups and just hoped that he wouldn't make a huge mess. Also when taking the plugs out of the other cups he still wasn't able to get much to drink. With this cup we have had great results! He is able to get a decent amount out of the cup at one time and doesn't make a mess! He is loving his new cup! And so are we! We plan to buy many more of these cups!
