Here comes the awesome Heavy-Haul Train! It's busy at the LEGO City goods yard. The welder is carrying out some last minute repairs on the tracks while the driver and engineer do the final checks on the powerful diesel engine. Climb aboard the giant, sliding crane, lower the hook and carefully lift the heavy helicopter onto the flatbed wagon. Then take control of the rugged backhoe and gather the heavy bricks together while the crane operator scoops them up and drops them into the hopper wagon. When all the cargo is aboard, load up the backhoe and you're ready to roll... All aboard! This tough motorized train with an 8-channel, 7-speed infrared remote control can haul just about anything! Includes 5 minifigures with assorted accessories: a train driver, engineer, welder, crane operator and a backhoe driver.

LEGO City Heavy-Haul Train (60098) is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 92.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best of 2 Worlds! This train set is so fitting for those who love Lego trains and Lego construction! The train is a fun build and the additional vehicles and pieces make it very easy to incorporate into a play environment. The level of imagination is great, and I am so pleased to have this set!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keep Haulin' The latest addition to the Lego train family is the 984 piece set Heavy-Haul Train (60098). The set contains eight numbered bags, six instruction booklets (two larger and four small), a whopping 33 stickers, and 16 curved rail pieces along with 12 sections of straight rail. The train is a graceful combination of a red and gray locomotive and three wagons. Two of the wagons are flatbeds and one is a hopper wagon with opening doors on both sides so it can discharge its cargo of dark gray 1x1 round bricks. The smaller flatbed wagon is carrying a green and white helicopter and the larger a yellow and black backhoe. Four of the minifigures (train driver, engineer, welder, and crane operator) are male and one (backhoe driver) is female. No two minifigures are alike, although two are dressed in identical orange and green jackets and gray trousers, but their heads and headgear are different. The welder is wearing a white shirt and blue overalls, the crane operator has an orange and brown jacket and dark blue trousers on him, and the female backhoe driver is dressed in almost completely orange clothes. All minifigures have their torsos printed on both sides and all are wearing red hard hats. Sadly, there are no double-sided heads in this set, they are always my favorites. The build is not inordinately difficult. For me, the hardest part of the build was probably putting the locomotive wheels on their axles, because in this case the wheels are not flush with the axle ends, and if one gets the assembly wrong the train won't run as smoothly as it should. Getting the stickers on straight (or something resembling straight) was also an onerous and time-consuming task, as was attaching the string to the crane boom and the part that connects to the crane bucket. Not surprisingly, given my past problems, the technic parts used in building the underside of the locomotive gave me some gyp, too. Connecting the train motor to the battery box and infrared receiver should be done with care, because if the connections are not sufficiently tight, the train will not operate. This time, I had no problems getting the battery box to function, but unfortunately I had a faulty infrared receiver in my set. I was able to confirm this by connecting the battery box straight to the train motor and when noticing that both the box and the motor worked perfectly after this, the problem had to be the infrared receiver between the two. I'm glad to say the customer service replaced the faulty part very quickly and now I have a perfectly functioning train in my collection. My favorite of the wagons is definitely the brown hopper wagon, I really like to empty the wagon and fill it up again, and I suspect most children will also share my enthusiasm. I just love the spring-operated crane bucket and the fact that it can be substituted by a hook in order to lift things with it. For some reason, the welder's equipment pleases me greatly, as it did in the Deep Sea Exploration Vessel (60095), too. What I also like about this train set is that getting the battery box off the locomotive is relatively easy. It requires only the removal of the largest section of the locomotive roof and possibly the power switch assembly, but these are easily replaced. There are also a few things that bothered me about this otherwise great set: 1) The crane boom is just a tad too short for lifting the helicopter. I noticed that the chopper bangs into the cabin of the crane when being lifted up. 2) One can't open the locomotive cockpit if the flatbed wagon carrying the helicopter is attached straight to the locomotive like in the introductory images shown on the website. 3) The helicopter cockpit might not open completely because the rotor blades are almost always in the way. However, this does not prevent placing a minifigure in the chopper. 4) The black 2x2 hinge plates that connect to the locomotive cockpits need to be pushed in place very firmly or they will pop off when the cockpits are opened. 5) The backhoe is slightly wide for its flatbed wagon, its wheels protrude over the sides, which makes it just as wide as the train track. 6) The set does not include switching tracks, which have been a regular feature in the two cargo carrying train sets before this one (60052 and 7939) but there is one minifigure more in this set than in those two and also a 16-stud-wide railroad crossing. 7) The train driver does not fit into the cabin with his coffee mug unless his arm is bent up. This is clearly shown in the instruction leaflet, so it does not come as a surprise. 8) As the helicopter undercarriage is smooth from underneath, it does not attach firmly to its wagon. This makes the helicopter a bit unstable when the train is going through a tight bend full tilt. All in all, a great set for train enthusiasts!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The 4th Train In My Collection I bought this set on December 26th, 2015. I wanted this for Christmas my didn't get it. Not only this makes the 4th train in my collection but it also is my 4th cargo train. I've always enjoyed building Lego trains. Not let's begin the review of this set. Locomotive: The locomotive is influenced a lot by the yellow version from set 7939. Honestly I like this one better mainly because it's red (red is my favorite color#. I like how it doesn't have a pantograph on the roof and has handrails on the sides. These features stand out the most to me. Ore/hopper car: This is my favorite freight car with this set. It look like you would see this in the mountains or something. You can load the ore by opening on top of the freight car. To offload the ore you simply just open the hatches on the sides of the ore car. The color scheme goes really well with it. Small flatcar: This flatcar is smaller unlike the ones that came with the 60052 cargo train. It has a fixed wheel system instead of a two-wheel system. The flatcar is used to transport the helicopter. The helicopter goes really well with the flatcar. Large flatcar: Now this flatcar I like much better. I've always like the charcoal plates used as flatcars the best. Another thing is I like double-wheel system train cars. This flatcar is used to transport the backhoe. I don't have very many construction vehicles but I'm glad to have a backhoe. The backhoe has buckets on the front and back. It kind of looks like a tractor but that's okay. Crane/loading bay: The crane is used to load the ore and the helicopter. It has a bucket that functions to load the ore into the ore car. To load the helicopter onto the flatcar just simply replace the bucket with a hook on the side. The area beside the crane is used to load/offload ore. Minifigures: There are 5 minifigures that come with this set. They include 2 railroad workers, 2 construction workers #1 male and 1 female), and a welder. Unfortunately when I was finished building and assembled a track layout I noticed that PF motor was functioning properly. It would always struggle and drag the tracks. I've tried fixing this problem several times such as buying a brand new PF motor, replacing this motor with another train motor, and just taking the Power Functions out and rebuilding them. None of these methods worked unfortunately. I've tried everything I could possibly do to fix this issue but nothing has worked. It still has this problem till this day. So I've decided to take out all of the power functions and play with it without the power functions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from value for the money Enjoyed making it and the testing after, although I find that the speed is too fast for the size of rounded areas of the track which should be spaced on a larger circumference.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disappointed The last thing you want on Christmas is for the lego train you purchased for your son is not to work. We were so disappointed when we got the train all set up to go around the tree and the train spun out. It wouldn't move more than a few inches and could not go around any curved track. We found it was having a hard time gripping the tracks and as a result we had to buy small grippy loom bands to go on the wheels the next day. This enabled it to grip the tracks and actually move, something that should be a given for a power train. We should not have had this problem, that is why we buy Lego. It is trustworthy. We noticed this train is far heavier than our other train, the Cargo Train. It is also far slower, which is understandable but takes away from the experience. On the crane, unlike many other Lego items we have with a rope, you cannot just pull the rope. If you do this the crane will begin to come apart. With a child, this is how they do it, they just pull it and expect it to come. They do not have the patience to wind and unwind the crane. While our son is smitten with this set and adores the crane, I have some serious issues with this set and would not recommend, considering the price of this set and the substantial issues my family has encountered, that you invest in this set. Rather look elsewhere, such as the cargo train, which has an amazing crane, tracks with switches, and an amazingly speedy engine. The wheelbarrow (surprisingly) is a major hit and the truck is a favourite.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from several issues This was my son's 'big' Christmas present this year, and with the price point, we expected this would be a really great set. But the reality is, it's just... okay. My son's biggest complaint is the small amount of track that comes with it. The single loop you can make creates curves that the train can barely handle without derailing. He asked for extra track for his birthday, so I'm on the site to purchase some and am finding pretty dismal reviews for the flex track, so I'm discouraged. Second, the key pieces that hold the power function element into the locomotive simply don't fit well. As in, no matter how well you push them into place, they will simply pop out again (literally popping out!) The connectors simply don't lock into place like Legos usually do. This is very frustrating and obviously causes issues with the train running. You have to be verrrrry gentle with the train or the piece pops out and you're done. Lastly, and this is my complaint not his, is that the train emits a very high-pitched whine when on. I suspect if we had a dog it would be very problematic. Is this normal?? It's incredibly annoying, even from an adjacent room. Overall, I'm very disappointed with this and I'm not sure I'd sink money into another Lego train.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LEGO 60098 Heavy Haul Train Great train, similar to the cargo train 7939 but a much better design. Love the design of the crane and how you can use it too as, you can use it to load and unload the helicopter and scoop the coal into the wagon. Now all we need is another Creator steam train like the 10194 Emerald Night to celebrate 50 years of Lego trains!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's okay... I bought this for my father - he loves trains, I love trains, we build Lego together. He gets everything put together and we hurry to get it all set up for Christmas, except we can't get the engine to go with any consistency. The wheels turn when we run it not on the track. But whether just the engine or pulling all the cars, the most he can get is 5 laps before it dies. We have done 3 sets of batteries, we have swapped connections. The normal is 3 laps then dies, and if you try it again in a few hours, you'll get another 3 laps. There's a whine when it runs on the track. And certainly not with any speed. Dad's crushed. He wanted nothing more than to show off his trains to his other daughter and her children and he was frustrated so didn't bother. The crane pops off it's stand when you lift any sort of weight with it. It's also an insane amount of batteries: 9 AAA total. Maybe change it to be bigger batteries for more oomph.
