Luke is a small engine, even for the Narrow Gauge Railway. He has an unquenchable enthusiasm for both his work and his fellow engines. Luke can connect to other Wooden Railway engines and vehicles with magnet connectors. Perfect for Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway sets!

Luke - Blue Mountain Muddle?I purchased this item about a year ago, to add to my Thomas Wooden Railway collection. After watching 'Blue Mountain Mystery,' I could tell that Luke was a very interesting character - his looks were distinctive, his personality charming, and his portrayal on screen - emerald paint, Irish accent, the like - would prove to make him a very endearing character and one that needed to join my collection. As Luke has not changed at all since then this review is still relevant today. The wooden model presented in the range is rather surprising in terms of looks; part of the lower score for Luke in this review is his looks being distorted from that seen in the television series. For fans of Thomas, the character's looks are important; for children, these items are as real to them as the characters on screen. These toys will be played with, stories and adventures created with them, episodes recreated. The wooden toy is the real character in their eyes, as real as anything they see on screen. The looks of these characters are thus very crucial to get right in these toys. Unfortunately, the major issue here is that Luke suffers from being built upon a standard-length chassis, which stretches his length out to poor proportions. Simply, Luke is too long and too short to be accurate. His wheels (black in reality on this model, unlike the stock promotional photo seen on this website showing the prototype's incorrect green wheels) are too far apart, and the distinctively long funnel and tall cab have been cut down to size, to fit the clearances of the Thomas range's bridges, tunnels, and stations. This gives him a stunted appearance, that does not look as close to the television series character as it should and could. There is an abundance of plastic used in construction of this model; the smokebox and firebox are both made of plastic, and the firebox in particular has molded details which are not painted. The dome on Luke's water tank is also plastic. Even though the model is built well and has a very high level of quality in it (this is a toy that is built to last a lifetime, like any other Thomas-brand product), the excessive use of plastic is a bit disappointing, especially considering many of these pieces could have easily been made from wood. There are many good details about Luke, however. His face is probably the best part of the model, being a very accurate and well-done rendition of the character's face. Paint details are done well, and some edges on this model are rounded to make play easier for children, as well as to protect from excessive paint loss. Build quality is very high on this model as well, with Luke being worth the premium price paid for Thomas-brand product. When other brands will fall apart, I can easily predict Luke to continue along for generations to come. Overall Luke is a bit of a disappointment for fans who want an accurate rendition of the character for their wooden railway. For parents and most collectors, there is nothing inherently wrong with Luke at all - he is well-built, well-dressed, and should provide lots of fun for those who want Luke for their narrow-gauge layout, or to recreate scenes from the movie. Look a bit closer, however, and you will see some compromises made to this character's looks in order to fit this chassis and scale. I'm still glad I picked him up, but I am also aware of the limitations in his appearance - and as stated before, appearance is everything in these toys.
