Meccano-Erector MeccaSpider Robot Kit is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 41.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Merry Christmas We bought the Spin Master for our 8 yr old grandson this year. It was a 7-14 yr old set (I think!). I wanted something that would take him at least 2 weeks to build. However, after 3-4 days he showed his grandpa the completed project. He was thrilled. We are so very happy that he loves his gift. If any of you know any other more difficult Meccano kits, I would love to hear from you.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun to Build, but Not Fun to Play I was so excited to watch my boys construct the Meccaspider by Meccano. My boys are 10 and 11 years old and have enjoyed many different building and engineering toys for a number of years now. I decided to take a hands off approach and merely observe their construction of the Meccaspider. They decided to build the Meccaspider with their friend that is 12 years old an is also on the robotics team at the same middle school as my 11 year son. I now had three eager boys that couldn't wait to get started. The box the Meccaspider comes in is very enticing and my boys were thrilled to be working on building this set from Meccano. I did notice that there was so much tape on the box that they did get a little frustrated just getting it all out of the package. Once they started however, all three of them were in their own little world for well over an hour. I loved the teamwork that the Meccaspider inspired as they worked together figuring out who would work on which piece as they also communicated to each other what they were or were not doing correctly. They mentioned that they liked the color of the Meccaspider and that they really appreciated that the instructions show the screw size needed for each task. However, they voiced quite a few complaints that the screwdriver handle seemed too small to be as efficient as they would have liked for the tasks at hand. After an hour my 10 year old lost interest and moved on to play elsewhere, but the 11 and 12 year old were hooked and focused on continuing to build the Meccaspider. They were so thrilled when they completed the robot, but their glee soon turned to frustration when they were unable to get the Meccaspider to follow the commands per the instructions. They also found the Meccaspider to be very slow and not as interactive as the box had led them to believe. This was a big letdown to all of the boys. I chose to give the Meccano Meccaspider 3 stars out of 5 since the older boys thoroughly enjoyed the building process--the 10 year old did not have the attention span the project required in one sitting. I would have given it 5 stars if they would have enjoyed the interactive aspect of the robot. Instead, it has sat on a shelf since construction and I don't see them planning to play with it again--they haven't even mentioned it. 5 stars for building and following directions but only 1 star for keeping their interest as a toy they'd like to return to play with time and time again. I'll most likely buy Meccano products in the future, but I just won't expect them to get much use out of the initial building stage as I had hoped for with the Meccaspider. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fun to build but novelty wears off My son, who is 11, enjoys robots and building toys so I was excited to have the opportunity to try the Meccano products. I opted to choose the Meccaspider as the other options seemed a bit too simple for him and MAX was not available. Upon arrival, he was immediately excited to begin building. I knew it would take several hours to put together so we booked some time on the weekend to sit down and get it up and running in one shot. The pieces are well organized and easy to find and sort. We found the instructions for building relatively easy to follow. There are a few errors in the photos, but nothing that impacts the overall finished product. The electronic connections were very clear and we had no issue getting those done easily. It took close to 3 hours for us to put the entire spider together. That's with my son doing most of the work so an adult working alone could probably do it in 2 hours or less. The unit is large when assembled, and felt quite sturdy. Once we got the batteries (4 C batteries) the spider came to life! While this was exciting, this is also where the Meccaspider lost some points for us. The instructions for using the controls and app are minimal and not super helpful. We had difficulty controlling the spider at first and found that using the app and controls on the product caused problems. Eventually we got it to work properly and had some fun with the "venom" spray. My son played with it for a few days, showing it to friends, but with little to do to interact and maximize the capabilities of the spider, he quickly started to lose interest. Overall, it is a nice quality product. However it seems well suited for those who enjoy the build and aren't looking for something super interactive. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Educational learning experience This spider robot is actually pretty big and heavy. Once built, it slowly moves around and shoots water out of its mouth. It has sensors to tell where things are, but even if it does crash into something, it won't have enough oomph to do any damage. It's a big reward for a child to work hard at building something like this and then see it work properly and that's what my son thought was the best. He felt a great measure of success and was kind of proud of himself. The entertainment value of its actions didn't last long enough for him though, because the robot was slow and other than the water spray, it's kind of boring after a couple of hours. The kit is recommended for ages 10 to 12 and I think that's a good age for building something with so many details. It might be more entertaining for someone half that age to play with it but you have to be careful for the small parts. I do really like the sense of accomplishment my son got from building it and I think that's where the value is. The spider worked just fine after it was built. It is a solid kit and I think the purpose isn't so much how fast it is but learning how things like this go together and how they work together. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Learning Project My son dug right in and almost immediately ran into some trouble and needed help. Nothing major, and, it actually is a great bonding project. I helped some and soon due to the amount of pieces and it took my son a few days to built. He would spend about an hour or so on it, then come back to it. He's 11 and aside from needing us to help hold something or clarify the instructions, he did extremely well on it. Yes, it doesn't move very fast, isn't very interactive but the lessons learnt from the building process far outweigh that! Once he was complete he took it into his Stem teacher to share with his class and everyone loved it! Well worth it for me and I look forward to purchasing more of these robot kits in the future. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Engaging Build I think the Meccaspider was a challenging yet age appropriate build for my 11 year old son. My son built this independently and it took him 3 days. Rather than clicking plastic pieces together he utilized screws, bolts and a manual screwdriver. He read the instructions and never asked for any help. He was fascinated with building this and watching the spider in action once built. He was determined to complete this project. Once built, the device took 5 C batteries, my only con is that it should be a remote control rather than the sensors being on the device itself. On the device you would have to press the action you wanted it to do. It was an enjoyable toy to see my son use his brain and take the time to build something rather than play a video game. Highly recommend. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally a great child's toy! I recently got the Meccano Meccaspider for my 12-year-old and 10-year old stepsons! Like many parents these days, I get frustrated that the kids seem to spend hours on video games instead of good old-fashioned building toys. This was a great combination of both. The instructions were a little confusing because they were only pictures but with some adult help, we got it together. It was actually a great bonding experience with the kids that I have really wanted to have. They were excited the entire time and they were proud of the accomplishment of building it together. After it was built, they had a great time playing the games and I was thankful the robot did not run into furniture like other toys. So far, they have continued to play with it and it has kept their attention. They play with it together and do a great job sharing one-on-one time with it. They really get a kick out of spraying water and having it guard their rooms as well. So, if you are looking for a great way to get the kids off the video games to do something constructive, this is an amazing toy. It is also a lot larger than I expected too! Rated 5 out of 5 by from FREAKING AWESOME! Let me cut right to the chase....this set is FREAKING AWESOME! When put together, it's solid and much bigger than you'd expect from the size of the box. Now that I've gotten my initial impressions out of the way with, let's look at the set in more detail. PACKAGING: The box itself is sturdy with colors that really pop and catch your eye when on the shelf. Opening it however, would be my first challenge. From the way the box is shaped, I found that opening it from the side was the best way to slide the contents out easily. Everything was nicely packaged, wrapped and organized in the cardboard tray. MANUAL: The instruction manual was presented in a very simple way using only pictures, which is great if you speak another language. However, you do need to pay close attention to the details. There were one or two times we had to take something apart because it just wasn't right. Also, it's not always always evident where the wires are supposed to go until you get to the final instructions. When fully assembled, some of the wires are actually exposed. This is something that I didn't totally like, but I might just be a little nit-picky about stuff like that. In my opinion, I found the age requirement to be just a little low. 12+ would probably be a little better. It was a great parent/child bonding experience though. SPIDER ITSELF: The set is really well put together. The pieces fit nicely and it has a nice solid feel to it. The controls are easy enough to use and are explained in the manual as well. The sensor does a decent job detecting objects in the spiders way and the venom shooter was nice touch. It is a little bit on the slow side, but I wasn't expecting a super fast remote control car and watching it move is actually pretty cool. Not to mention the dogs went into a barking frenzy as soon as I turned it on. The games were a little disappointing, but I wouldn't necessarily buy a set like this for the games. It's more about the construction aspect and then controlling the robot afterwards. MECANNO-APP: This was one of the coolest features of the whole set and not something I knew about going in. Although it is noted on the back of the box and in a small section towards the end of the manual, it's not something that seemed to be promoted as a big feature. The app actually lets you control the movements of the spider, play the sound effects and shoot venom on the fly right from your smartphone. It also allows you to program intricate routines for the spider to follow and it even has the instruction manual included as well. In conclusion, I'm ending this review the way I started it......THIS SET IS FREAKING AWESOME! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
